The authors draw upon a rich life history archive of letters, diaries, personal photographs and oral history interviews with former migrants, including those who settled in Australia and those who returned to Britain. They offer original interpretations of key historical themes, including motivations for emigration; gender relations and the family dynamics of migration; the 'very familiar and awfully strange' confrontation with the new world; the anguish of homesickness and return; and the personal and national identities of both settlers and returnees, fifty years on. --book cover.

The Ten Pound Poms is a story about more than just the small number of individuals portrayed in this book. During 1945 to 1973 over one million Britons left hte UK to start a new life on the other side of the world. Leaving family and friends behind, especially elderly parents was a major concern, knowing in all probability they may never see them again. In post-war Britain conditions were tough, and most wanted a chance to rebuild their lives away from the atrocities of war. Australia provided that opportunity. It offered hope and a new life to anyone who wanted it - a chance to escape. Ten pounds was a pittance to pay to discover if the grass really was greener on the other side. This book tells the candid story of three young brothers with nothing to lose, who in their naivety, saw the Australian Assisted Passage Scehem as a chance to see the world and an opportunity for an incredible two-year adventure. For their parents however, it brought an emptiness from which they would never recover. They left England in 1964 and the countless life experiences they endured strengthened their resolve immeasurably and the young woman who accompanied John back to the UK was an absolute joy. This book demonstrates succinctly the undeniable role that destiny can play in shaping people's lives. The Ten Pound Poms may be relics from a bygone era, but hopefully their spirit of optimism, adventure and endeavour remain just as relevant in today's society as they were all those years ago.

We were sailing on the £10 scheme, supported by the Australian government, as they were desperate to boost their population of Australia in the 60's. The "Ellinis" was full of immigrants, so much so, that men and women were separated, four men to a cabin and four women in other cabins. My husband was on a separate deck at the opposite side of the ship.

It's the 1960s and Jacky, Angie and Linda are three young English girls who break away from their home and families in UK and become 'Ten pound Poms' using the Australian immigration policy as a means to explore 'the wide, brown land'. Their adventures, from flatting in Kings Cross to travelling by motorcycle all over Australia, including the then unsealed Nullarbor and Mt Isa track, will amaze you. It will keep you laughing and remind you that if you have the will there is a way; it's just a matter of following your dreams. Australia is now full of immigrants from all over the world but in the late 1960s, during the white Australia policy, a large amount were recruited from Britain to work in the expanding motor and white goods industry. The Baby Boomer generation, now in their 60s and 70's are busy collecting photos and momentos of their youth. This book recalls the days in Australia when opportunities were there to be taken, the time before bureaucracy had taken hold and 'health and safety' was unheard of. It will appeal to many who came to Australia under the immigration scheme of that time and have their own memories of finding their feet in a new country.

Based on extensive research and interviews with leading sports executives, "Pommies" is the first book to investigate the management of professional cricket in England. Three years after the great Ashes victory in 2005, the England team has reverted to type. In 2007, it lost three out of four Test series and got nowhere in the ICC World Cup and Twenty20 tournaments. Since 1987, Australia has thrashed England 34-9 in Tests and won four World Cups to England's none. Today, Australia has five cricket stadiums with more than 30,000 seats to England's none. Their team is accessible to all on Channel Nine, but England fans have to pay GBP400 a year for Sky. Using Australia as the model and inspiration, "Pommies" explains what is wrong with England cricket and presents a radical plan to improve the national team and open up the game for fans.
