The Banolians is a family history that speaks to today’s reader, taking them on a journey from 1820 and the upper reaches of European nobility, through poverty, grief and separation from Estonia, England & Ireland to Australia, The story then returns to England in the ‘Edwardian Summer’ before World War 1, including tennis at Wimbledon, student life at Cambridge, and on to the trenches of Europe, while family members wait anxiously in Melbourne. Starting with the love affair between the Estonian Baroness Amalie Christine and her doctor, Ferdinand Jencken – and their elopement - the story is built from personal diaries, letters and memoirs. They describe not only the perils and set backs, but also astonishing changes of fortunes, including their rescue by a complete stranger, who becomes the family’s benefactor. Spanning three generations, readers have a ring-side seat to the spiritualism movement of the nineteenth century, the hardships of life in colonial Sydney, the world of ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ and its attendant economic crash, the perils of sea travel and the many small, personal distresses that family life brings. The Banolians is frequently stranger than fiction, as life so often is.

"The grand old Melbourne home Banole has long gone, and with it the way of life of a prosperous colonial Anglo-Australian family. I have read many family histories and sagas. The Banolians is unlike any, except War And Peace perhaps. This is a story on a grand scale by a witty yet scrupulous historian who has immersed herself in the secrets, successes and travails of an exceptionally talented family spanning two centuries. Their lives and adventures transport us from the Tsar’s Russia to every corner of the world. — (Dr) Andrew Lemon AM FRHSV The Banolians is a family history that speaks to today’s reader, taking them on a journey from 1820 and the upper reaches of European nobility, through poverty, grief and separation from Estonia, England & Ireland to Australia, The story then returns to England in the ‘Edwardian Summer’ before World War 1, including tennis at Wimbledon, student life at Cambridge, and on to the trenches of Europe, while family members wait anxiously in Melbourne. Kathleen Jordan was a vibrant businesswoman, mother and grandmother until one morning in August 2011, she suffered a massive stroke and her world was turned upside. Her memoir Standing Up! gives a detailed and compelling insight into the effects of major stroke and the vital support and advocacy needed when she could not stand up for herself. Kathleen Jordan, with Vicki Steggall, recounts her journey through stroke, from the acute trauma, through to the stroke ward, short and long term rehabilitation units and, finally, her amazing recovery to return to semi-normalcy and everyday life. Jordan and Steggall reinforce the powerful role advocacy, family support and determination play in recovery and give specific strategies and advice to families who are feeling under-supported by medical limitations.

“This lively appreciation of one of the most intimidating and massive novels ever written should persuade many hesitant readers to try scaling the heights of War and Peace sooner rather than later” (Publishers Weekly). Considered by many critics the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is also one of the most feared. And at 1,500 pages, it’s no wonder why. Still, in July 2009 Newsweek put War and Peace at the top of its list of 100 great novels and a 2007 edition of the AARP Bulletin included the novel in their list of the top four books everybody should read by the age of fifty. A New York Times survey from 2009 identified Warand Peace as the world classic you’re most likely to find people reading on their subway commute to work. What might all those Newsweek devotees, senior citizens, and harried commuters see in a book about the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s? War and Peace is many things. It is a love story, a family saga, a war novel. But at its core it’s a novel about human beings attempting to create a meaningful life for themselves in a country torn apart by war, social change, political intrigue, and spiritual confusion. It is a mirror of our times. Give War and Peace a Chance takes readers on a journey through War and Peace that reframes their very understanding of what it means to live through troubled times and survive them. Touching on a broad range of topics, from courage to romance, parenting to death, Kaufman demonstrates how Tolstoy’s wisdom can help us live fuller, more meaningful lives. The ideal companion to War and Peace, this book “makes Tolstoy’s characters lively and palpable…and may well persuade readers to finally dive into one of the world’s most acclaimed—and daunting—novels” (Kirkus Reviews).

World-renowned aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr Bryan Mendelson guides us through the fascinating history of facial surgery. From his patients’ own stories, learn what it’s like when what’s on the outside doesn’t match who we are on the inside. Travel back through the millennia to see how the communal societies of our simian ancestors transformed the pre-human face into the expressive features we have today. Learn why the face is so important and how it has evolved into an essential—instinctive and immediate—tool of communication. Revisit the birth of reconstructive surgery in 6th century BCE India, and follow developments through the lunchtime face lifts of 1920s France, to the discovery of the fascia (the fibrous support layer beneath the skin), and Mendelson’s own role in changing the face of aesthetic plastic surgery forever. Full of fascinating historical detail told from a unique professional perspective, In Your Face provides real insight into why we’re so invested in appearance and the lengths we’re prepared to go to change the way we look.

Finalist for the National Book Award for Nonfiction * New York Times Bestseller * A Huffington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of the Year * One of the Best Books of the Month on Goodreads * Library Journal Best Sci-Tech Book of the Year * An American Library Association Notable Book of the Year “Sy Montgomery’s The Soul of an Octopus does for the creature what Helen Macdonald’s H Is for Hawk did for raptors.” —New Statesman, UK “One of the best science books of the year.” —Science Friday, NPR Another New York Times bestseller from the author of The Good Good Pig, this “fascinating…touching…informative…entertaining” (The Daily Beast) book explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus—a surprisingly complex, intelligent, and spirited creature—and the remarkable connections it makes with humans. In pursuit of the wild, solitary, predatory octopus, popular naturalist Sy Montgomery has practiced true immersion journalism. From New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, she has befriended octopuses with strikingly different personalities—gentle Athena, assertive Octavia, curious Kali, and joyful Karma. Each creature shows her cleverness in myriad ways: escaping enclosures like an orangutan; jetting water to bounce balls; and endlessly tricking companions with multiple “sleights of hand” to get food. Scientists have only recently accepted the intelligence of dogs, birds, and chimpanzees but now are watching octopuses solve problems and are trying to decipher the meaning of the animal’s color-changing techniques. With her “joyful passion for these intelligent and fascinating creatures” (Library Journal Editors’ Spring Pick), Montgomery chronicles the growing appreciation of this mollusk as she tells a unique love story. By turns funny, entertaining, touching, and profound, The Soul of an Octopus reveals what octopuses can teach us about the meeting of two very different minds.
