This book delves into the brutal and dark history of the Barbary slave trade, specifically focusing on its effects on Europe and the quest for freedom in the face of oppression. It provides a clear, factual, and unapologetic account of the events, while offering insights into the motivations and consequences of the trade. With a balanced and logical approach, the author debunks the myths surrounding the Barbary slave trade and offers a red-pilled perspective on this historical atrocity.

Sumner's "views of Christianity and Islam will fascinate historian, clergyman, and educated lay-person alike." -Goodreads First published in 1853 by Charles Sumner, "White Slavery in the Barbary States" outlines the history of the centuries in which Moslems enslaved Europeans and later, Americans; and what led to its halt. Sumner focuses on many specific instances of Europeans and Americans captured and sold at Moslem slave markets. The Barbary slave trade refers to the slave markets that flourished on the Barbary Coast of North Africa, which included the Ottoman provinces of Algeria, Tunisia and Tripolitania and the independent sultanate of Morocco, between the 16th and middle of the 18th century. The Ottoman provinces in North Africa were nominally under Ottoman suzerainty, but in reality they were mostly autonomous. The North African slave markets were part of the Arab slave trade. The Barbary CoastEuropean slaves were acquired by Barbary pirates in slave raids on ships and by raids on coastal towns from Italy to the Netherlands, as far north as Iceland and east into the Mediterranean. The Ottoman eastern Mediterranean was the scene of intense piracy. As late as the 18th century, piracy continued to be a "consistent threat to maritime traffic in the Aegean". For centuries, large vessels on the Mediterranean relied on galley slaves supplied by North African and Ottoman slave traders.

Captured by Tripoli's Barbary pirates, Stephen Fletcher was first enslaved, then assigned to guard the Pasha's harem. Surrounded by sultry, sloe-eyed beauties whom he dared not touch under pain of torture, Fletcher lived only to escape -- until he met lovely Eve Doremus. An American like himself, Eve had been bought by Marlani, the Pasha’s favorite, to bedevil Fletcher for rejecting her advances. Together, Fletcher and Eve fought their way through every temptation and indignity in their frantic bid for survival.

Occasional incidents continued to occur until another British raid on Algiers in 1824, and finally, a French invasion of Algiers in 1830, which placed it under colonial rule. Tunis was similarly invaded by France in 1881. Tripoli returned to direct Ottoman control in 1835, before finally falling into Italian hands in the 1911 Italo-Turkish War. The slave trade finally ceased on the Barbary coast when European governments passed laws granting emancipation to slaves. This is a part of "slavery" and the slave trade that they don't teach in American schools. Slavery is about one group of people subjecting another group to subhuman treatment, whether it's race-based or not.It happened all over the world. Race was merely a cover - or a convenient excuse - for this human atrocity.

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the Barbary States captured and held for ransom nearly five hundred American sailors. The attacks on Americans abroad—and the government’s apparent inability to control the situation—deeply scarred the public. Captives and Countrymen examines the effect of these acts on early national culture and on the new republic's conception of itself and its position in the world. Lawrence A. Peskin uses newspaper and other contemporaneous accounts—including recently unearthed letters from some of the captive Americans—to show how information about the North African piracy traveled throughout the early republic. His dramatic account reveals early concepts of national identity, party politics, and the use of military power, including the lingering impact of the Barbary Wars on the national consciousness, the effects of white slavery in North Africa on the American abolitionist movement, and the debate over founding a national navy. This first systematic study of how the United States responded to "Barbary Captivity" shows how public reaction to international events shaped America domestically and its evolving place in the world during the early nineteenth century.
