Christine Buci-Glucksmann’s The Madness of Vision is one of the most influential studies in phenomenological aesthetics of the baroque. Integrating the work of Merleau-Ponty with Lacanian psychoanalysis, Renaissance studies in optics, and twentieth-century mathematics, the author asserts the materiality of the body and world in her aesthetic theory. All vision is embodied vision, with the body and the emotions continually at play on the visual field. Thus vision, once considered a clear, uniform, and totalizing way of understanding the material world, actually dazzles and distorts the perception of reality. In each of the nine essays that form The Madness of Vision Buci-Glucksmann develops her theoretical argument via a study of a major painting, sculpture, or influential visual image—Arabic script, Bettini’s “The Eye of Cardinal Colonna,” Bernini’s Saint Teresa and his 1661 fireworks display to celebrate the birth of the French dauphin, Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes, the Paris arcades, and Arnulf Rainer’s self-portrait, among others—and deftly crosses historical, national, and artistic boundaries to address Gracián’s El Criticón; Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo; the poetry of Hafiz, John Donne, and Baudelaire; as well as baroque architecture and Anselm Kiefer’s Holocaust paintings. In doing so, Buci-Glucksmann makes the case for the pervasive influence of the baroque throughout history and the continuing importance of the baroque in contemporary arts.

Between 1979 and 1982 Nicholas Hagger wrote three letters to the eminent literary critic Christopher Ricks about his poetic identity, and Ricks agreed with his final view that his verse blends the Romantic and Classical traditions within the Baroque tradition. In 1979 and again in 1982 Ricks asked him to select 30 poems. Forty years later A Baroque Vision presents a selection that shows his Baroque roots. Part One presents 30 poems written before 1979, and Part Two adds 70 verse selections written between 1979 and 2019. A Baroque Vision presents 100 verse selections drawn from 50 volumes of his poems, verse plays and masques. The Baroque style, which can be found in all European countries, combines the spiritual and the sensual, and features movement, transformation, the Mystic Way, the mysterious Light, the transcending of death, the divine soul and Heaven, as illustrated in Rubens' The Apotheosis of James I (shown on the front cover); and blends the Romantic and Classical traditions. In his Preface Hagger shows very clearly that his Baroque vision was behind, and grew into, his Universalism, his philosophy and worldview of the unity of the universe whose development can be traced in his Selected Letters and Collected Prefaces, and in the companion volume to this work The Essentials of Universalism (all published by O-Books). These 100 verse selections confirm that his Baroque vision is inspired by the 17th century (by the Metaphysical poets, Milton and Dryden), but also by the 18th and 19th centuries (by Pope, Wordsworth and Tennyson).

During the span from the early 17th century until the 1740s, Europe witnessed the flourishing of the Baroque style across various artistic realms such as architecture, music, dance, painting, and sculpture. This cultural movement persisted, coexisting with emerging artistic forms, within the realms of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, including the Iberian Peninsula, until the initial years of the nineteenth century. Positioned chronologically between Renaissance art and Mannerism on one side and the Rococo (sometimes referred to as "late Baroque") and Neoclassical styles on the other, Baroque art in Lutheran regions also developed, although it primarily found support from the Catholic Church as a counterbalance to the simplicity and austerity prevalent in Protestant architecture, art, and music. In order to evoke a profound sense of awe, the Baroque style accentuated elements of contrast, movement, intricate detail, vibrant color, grandiosity, and unexpected surprises. Originating in Rome at the outset of the 17th century, this stylistic wave rapidly expanded its influence across France, northern Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, southern Germany, and Russia. By the 1730s, it underwent transformation into the rocaille or Rococo style, gaining popularity in France and Central Europe until the mid- to late-eighteenth century. Renowned for its opulent and intricate ornamentation in the realm of decorative arts, the Baroque style paved distinctive paths in each country's departure from Renaissance classicism. Despite the diversity in these trajectories, a common thread persists – the Renaissance aesthetic elements serve as the foundational point. The classical repertory is densely packed, thick, overlapping, and laden to create startling effects. Elements such as cartouches, trophies, weaponry, fruit or flower baskets, and other innovative themes introduced by the Baroque movement find expression through marquetry, stucco, or carved forms. This intricate tapestry of artistic expression characterizes the Baroque era, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Europe.

The definition of the Baroque age, meaning he set of complex cultural and artistic expressions that developed in Europe during the 17th century, is still subject to debate among critics and historians. In addition to these manifestly theatrical expressions, however, the art of the 17th century also included quite different trends such as the naturalism in the works of Caravaggio, classicism in the works of the Carraccis and of Poussin, the intimacy of Vermeer and the pictorial atmospheres in the works of Rembrandt and Velazquez. A reflection of the social , political, scientific, cultural and religious events that profoundly churned European society, the Baroque illuminated Spain, France, the Netherlands and other areas of Europe, and even the rest of the world,, with new splendor, from the time of its birth in Italy where it was sponsored by the Church and powerful families. At the same time, the emergence of new patrons and collectors meant that it followed new traces encountering music, literature and theatre. At the beginning of the 18th century, following the mature evolution of Baroque art, the Rococo was born in France - and then expanded o the rest of Europe - characterized by airy forms, arabesques, elegance and luminous colours in painting as well as sculpture and architecture; instead of heroic or sacred themes, it embodied a more light-hearted glance at aristocratic life, or scenes of daily life that might be gay or frivolous or even quiet. Watteau, Fragonard, Boucher, Canaletto and Bellotto were representatives of this style in painting while, in architecture, Neumann and the magnificent Residenz in Wurzburg are particularly worthy of note.
