In today's world, children's development is increasingly under threat. Basic experiences (such as joy, tenderness, learning how to love, well-being etc.) which are crucial for healthy development are often deficient or tainted. As a result, more and more children show signs of restlessness, anxiety and relational problems. This study examines the profound functioning at the root of human life and analyses the characteristics of these functional processes - the forms they present at different stages of development, how they may be supported by adults, what dysfunctions can occur and how such imbalances can be cared for or healed. The individual as a whole is considered in the light of all its Functions: emotional, cognitive, physical and postural. This text provides numerous case histories, through which the author illustrates various modalities of prevention, cure and therapeutic intervention for children and adolescents. This work is based on the theory that only a truly comprehensive outlook can help us understand what really happens during human development and devise truly effective treatments, avoiding the error of fragmenting the mind and the body, which are seen here as inseparable elements of a unified whole.

Winner of the 2003 Gradiva Award and the 2003 Goethe Award for Psychoanalytic Scholarship Arguing for the importance of attachment and emotionality in the developing human consciousness, four prominent analysts explore and refine the concepts of mentalization and affect regulation. Their bold, energetic, and encouraging vision for psychoanalytic treatment combines elements of developmental psychology, attachment theory, and psychoanalytic technique. Drawing extensively on case studies and recent analytic literature to illustrate their ideas, Fonagy, Gergely, Jurist, and Target offer models of psychotherapy practice that can enable the gradual development of mentalization and affect regulation even in patients with long histories of violence or neglect.

The Evolving Self written by Robert Kegan and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983-08-15 with Psychology categories.

The Evolving Self focuses upon the most basic and universal of psychological problems—the individual’s effort to make sense of experience, to make meaning of life. According to Robert Kegan, meaning-making is a lifelong activity that begins in earliest infancy and continues to evolve through a series of stages encompassing childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The Evolving Self describes this process of evolution in rich and human detail, concentrating especially on the internal experience of growth and transition, its costs and disruptions as well as its triumphs. At the heart of our meaning-making activity, the book suggests, is the drawing and redrawing of the distinction between self and other. Using Piagetian theory in a creative new way to make sense of how we make sense of ourselves, Kegan shows that each meaning-making stage is a new solution to the lifelong tension between the universal human yearning to be connected, attached, and included, on the one hand, and to be distinct, independent, and autonomous on the other. The Evolving Self is the story of our continuing negotiation of this tension. It is a book that is theoretically daring enough to propose a reinterpretation of the Oedipus complex and clinically concerned enough to suggest a variety of fresh new ways to treat those psychological complaints that commonly arise in the course of development. Kegan is an irrepressible storyteller, an impassioned opponent of the health-and-illness approach to psychological distress, and a sturdy builder of psychological theory. His is an original and distinctive new voice in the growing discussion of human development across the life span.

The Experience Of Impression Formation And The Development Of The Self written by Frank J. Ripullo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Impression formation (Psychology) categories.

[Abstract] The current thesis explores the question, "What is the experience of impression formation and the development of the self?" The personal experiences are described using the heuristic research model. In exploring variations in strategies of impression formation and the development of the self, an immersion of experiences were needed to understand the phenomena at a deeper level. A use of new developments in the literature was used to investigate and employ a qualitative approach, featuring in-depth interviews conducted in the spring of 1997. A literature review of books, journals and dissertations revealed that little research has been conducted in this area; that no similar study on this topic has been completed. The material for the study was provided by three major sources: 1) data was obtained from eight co-researchers who shared their own personal experiences; 2)a literature review consisting of journals, articles and books; 3) self-search through a process of incubation, immersion and self-dialogue. Each interview was recorded, processed and clarified for emerging themes. All the data collected provided the major themes, illustrating the development of the self through impression formation. The identified themes were: 1. Influence of Early Relationships, 2. Other's Expectations, 3. True Self, False Self, 4. Love, 5. Determination, 6. Respect, 7. Fear. The findings uncover some interesting quandaries. First, the co-researchers revealed pertinent information and strategies about impression formation. This information clarified the significance of the development of the self through life's early surroundings. The study linked perception within the social structure as having an effect on the formation of the identity based on insecurities repressed in the developmental years. The study also linked the self and behavior through feelings, cognition, attitudes and experiences in shaping the development of one's world. The development of self and transformation of repressed feelings resulted in behavior that is separated from the true self. The data obtained through this study has serious implications in understanding the significance of the "spoil" identity and its development. This study and its findings can benefit psychologists, educators, sociologists, and society at large, by adding new awareness and contributing in an area that has previously been somewhat ignored.

Self-consciousness is a topic of considerable importance to a variety of empirical and theoretical disciplines such as developmental and social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, and philosophy. This volume presents essays on self-consciousness by prominent psychologists, cognitive neurologists, and philosophers. Some of the topics included are the infants’ sense of self and others, theory of mind, phenomenology of embodiment, neural mechanisms of action attribution, and hermeneutics of the self. A number of these essays argue in turn that empirical findings in developmental psychology, phenomenological analyses of embodiment, or studies of pathological self-experiences point to the existence of a type of self-consciousness that does not require any explicit I —thought or self-observation, but is more adequately described as a pre-reflective, embodied form of self-familiarity. The different contributions in the volume amply demonstrate that self-consciousness is a complex multifaceted phenomenon that calls for an integration of different complementary interdisciplinary perspectives. Development Of Self Determination Through The Life Course written by Michael L. Wehmeyer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-16 with Psychology categories.

This volume examines the developmental aspects of the general psychological construct of self-determination. The term refers to self- (vs. other-) caused action—to people acting volitionally—as based on their own will. Research conducted in the fields of psychology and education shows the importance of self-determination to adolescent development and positive adult outcomes. The first part of this volume presents an overview of theories and historical antecedents of the construct. It looks at the role of self-determination in major theories of human agentic behavior and of adolescent development and individuation. The second part of the volume examines the developmental origins and the trajectory of self-determination in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, and looks as aging aspects. The next part presents studies on the evolutionary aspects, individual differences and healthy psychological development. The last part of the book covers the development of causal and agentic capability.
