Excerpt from The Basque Country It is a far cry to the days of the eighteenth century when every traveller, safely returned from the grand tour in posting-chaise and diligence, felt it his duty to write his personal impressions of the journey. To-day the whole world travels, and description savours of impertinence. We expect everyone to have seen at least as much as we have seen. Yet, strangely enough, though the Basque country is within a well-travelled zone, no single book can be found in English to answer the questions that the traveller, charmed and interested by this little people, is sure to ask. Excerpt from Legends and Popular Tales of the Basque People Yet this fact does not prove that it is only in traditional beliefs where the origin of the evil is to be sought for. So long as we are unable to define the limits which separate truth from error in space and time, in the physical and moral worlds, man will ever allow himself to be carried away by the irresistible yearning for that which is unknown and incomprehensible, to seek in the mysterious regions of fancy for abundant food to satisfy his curiosity, and some explanation for that which he cannot understand. By no other means is it comprehensible how superstition has always subsisted in every race, whatever be the religious profession or degree of culture it may have reached, or age in which it existed. The object may have changed, the form may have varied, as it has always done under the various influences exercised by religion, climate, customs, and other causes; nevertheless superstition has not ceased to pervade and dominate the spirit-as powerfully now as it has ever done. It is true that in our days the belief in witches is gone by, but, on the other hand, a world of spirits have risen up, or rather been discovered, as many spiritualists assert, who assume to live in perfect union with them. Excerpt from A Tandem-Trip in Spain: From Biarritz Through the Basque Provinces, the Country and the People This brochure does not attempt to deal with the well-known parts of Spain, but is a simple record of small personal experiences and daily observations during a Tandem-drive in that less frequented, but none the less interesting, corner of the Peninsula, called the Basque Provinces, which is so easily accessible from Biarritz. Many modern French speakers have come to know about the Basques through Jacques Allieres's concise, reliable book, which we now publish in English for the first time. Published in the 1970s, before the post-Franco Spanish constitution and the creation of the autonomous communities on the South side of the border and written from the perspective of the north, this book provides and invaluable snapshot of a time and place in Basque history. The book is part of the Presses Universitaires de France's wellknown collection Que sais-je? (What do I know about?), one of which is Allieres's The Basques, about the Basque Country and its inhabitants. A linguist, Allieres has much to say about the language, but he is well versed on many other subjects. Prehistory, history, geography, economy, and much more are presented in this slender little volume. As Allieres states in his introduction, offering information about the Basques in such a limited format is almost impossible. He does so by giving the reader useful information in each section without reducing the high standard of his academic texts, as befits a book that is part of an encyclopedia, particularly in connection, directly or indirectly, with the language. In fact, while this book offers little information about items of contemporary culture, that is not the work's main subject: it is more centered on ethnology and anthropology, which is why the language takes such a prominent place, the Basques themselves using it to denominate their own ethnic group."

The Basque Country is a land of fascinating paradoxes and enigmas. Home to one of Europe's oldest peoples and most mysterious languages, with a living folklore rich in archaic rituals and dances, it also boasts a dynamic post-modern energy, with the reinvention of Bilbao creating a model for the twenty-first-century city of cultural services and information technologies. Hugging the elbow of the Bay of Biscay on both the French and Spanish sides of the Pyrenees, this small territory abounds in big contrasts, ranging from moist green valleys to semi-desert badlands, from snowy sierras to sandy beaches, from harsh industrial landscapes to bucolic beech woods. This often idyllic scenery is the stage for fierce political passions. Almost every aspect of the Basque Country generates passionate disagreement, even its precise location. Spanish and French centralism, often authoritarian and sometimes brutal, has met with resistance for two centuries. Most recently and notoriously ETA, a terrorist group with deep popular support, has engaged in a bloody 45-year conflict. But many Basques consider themselves full French or Spanish citizens, and fear political and linguistic exclusion under Basque nationalist rule.

Excerpt from The Alphabet of the Primitive Language of Spain: And a Philosophical Examination of the Antiquity and Civilization of the Basque People Prevailing prejudices: independent of all such considerations, it is evident that in countries where priests rule, all philosophical and metaphysical discussion must have an orthodox basis to entitle it to a passport from the church, without this it cannot proceed: Mr Erro wrote in a country where there was an inquisition, with an imprimatur, a double headed monster, who keeps incessant watch at the portal of the intellectual elysium. Excerpt from The Most Striking Events of a Twelvemonth's Campaign With Zumalacarregui in Navarre and the Basque Provinces IT is now twa years since the insurrection of the Basque Provinces commenced, and the remnant of an expiring faction, as it was termed, hunted like a band of robbers amongst the mountains, repenting that it had ever embraced the cause of an outlawed Prince, has already swelled, as all sides admit, into an imposing party. The partisans of Don Carlos were represented as only the blind and bigoted few, or an assem bl e of those lawless characters who are wont (like the sea bir which takes advantage of a wreck or havock, to appear on a clouded horizon) to profit, for purposes of plunder, or ambition, by the moment of incertitude which always follows the change of any ancient and established mode of govern ment, marked and branded by public opinion, without friends or partisans. It was asserted that, aware how desperate was the cause they had embraced, they were rather endeavouring to escape from punishment than struggling with any hope of success.
