Bookwork written by Garrett Stewart and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06 with Art categories.

“There they rest, inert, impertinent, in gallery space—those book forms either imitated or mutilated, replicas of reading matter or its vestiges. Strange, after its long and robust career, for the book to take early retirement in a museum, not as rare manuscript but as functionless sculpture. Readymade or constructed, such book shapes are canceled as text when deposited as gallery objects, shut off from their normal reading when not, in some yet more drastic way, dismembered or reassembled.” So begins Bookwork, which follows our passion for books to its logical extreme in artists who employ found or simulated books as a sculptural medium. Investigating the conceptual labor behind this proliferating international art practice, Garrett Stewart looks at hundreds of book-like objects, alone or as part of gallery installations, in this original account of works that force attention upon a book’s material identity and cultural resonance. Less an inquiry into the artist’s book than an exploration of the book form’s contemporary objecthood, Stewart’s interdisciplinary approach traces the lineage of these aggressive artifacts from the 1919 Unhappy Readymade of Marcel Duchamp down to the current crisis of paper-based media in the digital era. Bookwork surveys and illustrates a stunning variety of appropriated and fabricated books alike, ranging from hacksawed discards to the giant lead folios of Anselm Kiefer. The unreadable books Stewart engages with in this timely study are found, again and again, to generate graphic metaphors for the textual experience they preclude, becoming in this sense legible after all.

This volume covers the development of the textual medium in art from the early combinations of text, lettering and image in the work of seminal artists such as El Lissitzky and Kurt Schwitters right up to the present day. The use of written language has been one of the most defining developments in visual art of the twentieth century. The use of text can be seen in some of the most avant-garde artwork of the twentieth century; René Magritte and dadaist artists used it to describe anti-art and anti-aesthetic sentiment. The work of some of the most famous conceptual artists of the 1960s began to use written language as an artwork in itself. Artists such as John Baldessari, Lawrence Weiner and Bruce Nauman, who are still today some of the world's most respected artists, helped push the boundaries of what constitutes art at the time and it has continued to develop since that period. The expansive Art & Language group of artists and theorists, including Joseph Kosuth, also reconsidered the possibilities of "linguistic art."

So You Ve Been Publicly Shamed written by Jon Ronson and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-31 with Social Science categories.

Now a New York Times bestseller and from the author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world's most underappreciated forces: shame. 'It's about the terror, isn't it?' 'The terror of what?' I said. 'The terror of being found out.' For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they're being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job. A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people's faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control. Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You've Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it.

He was a suspected Cold War spy. She became the glamorous KGB double agent in a Bond movie. When a prisoner writes to a movie star, the best he can hope for is a signed photo. But when Alex wrote to Fiona she was beguiled by the artistry of his letters and poems. In this heartfelt memoir, the author recalls-for the first time-her 12 year correspondence with Prisoner 789959 Alexander Alexandrowicz-including his wise counsel about her marriage, divorce and career at the forefront of cinema, TV and theatre. Based on their original letters, the narrative is one of contrasts-about a man in the darkest days of prolonged incarceration and a woman surrounded by the brightest lights imaginable. Shocked by his long sentence, Alex protested his innocence and railed against the system, often from solitary confinement-whilst Fiona Fullerton roamed the world, a celebrity nomad. Dear Fiona is the true story of how two people from social extremes forged a 30 year bond of friendship. It also tells of how they came to rely on each other and the author's search for him after he disappeared. 'Have you ever heard of Nadejda Philaretovna von Meck? She and Tchaikovsky were corresponding for years, they never met-and yet he produced his finest work for her. My finest work shall be for you... It is you alone who has given me strength while I have been in prison, the strength to restore lost and dying hope into burning resolution'. 'Yes, the bond between us will get stronger, Alex. It will never die now. I'll always be here when you need me. I need you too...' Reviews 'Wonderful, fascinating, fantastic' Aled Jones, Good Morning Sunday, BBC Radio 2. 'Poignant, tender and informative, Dear Fiona: Letters from a suspected Soviet Spy is a wonderful collection of letters between two people who, through the power of words, set out to make life that little bit more bearable when darkness called. A powerful and engaging narrative helps showcase the immeasurable talent Alex Alexandrowicz is' www.MiloRambles.com 'Compelling, gripping, moving, insightful' Erwin James, Guardian correspondent.
