"Brandywine Creek calmly meanders through the Pennsylvania countryside today, but on September 11, 1777, it served as the scenic backdrop for the largest battle of the American Revolution, one that encompassed more troops over more land than any combat fought on American soil until the Civil War. Long overshadowed by the stunning American victory at Saratoga, the complex British campaign that defeated George WashingtonÕs colonial army and led to the capture of the capital city of Philadelphia was one of the most important military events of the war. Michael C. HarrisÕs impressive Brandywine: A Military History of the Battle that Lost Philadelphia but Saved America, September 11, 1777, is the first full-length study of this pivotal engagement in many years. General Sir William Howe launched his campaign in late July 1777, when he loaded his army of 16,500 British and Hessian soldiers aboard a 265-ship armada in New York and set sail. Six difficult weeks later HoweÕs expedition landed near Elkton, Maryland, and moved north into Pennsylvania. WashingtonÕs rebel army harassed HoweÕs men at several locations including a minor but violent skirmish at CoochÕs Bridge in Delaware on September 3. Another week of hit-and-run tactics followed until Howe was within three miles of ChadsÕs Ford on Brandywine Creek, behind which Washington had posted his army in strategic blocking positions along a six-mile front. The young colonial capital of Philadelphia was just 25 miles farther east. Obscured by darkness and a heavy morning fog, General Howe initiated his plan of attack at 5:00 a.m. on September 11, pushing against the American center at ChadsÕs Ford with part of his army while the bulk of his command swung around WashingtonÕs exposed right flank to deliver his coup de main, destroy the colonials, and march on Philadelphia. Warned of HoweÕs flanking attack just in time, American generals turned their divisions to face the threat. The bitter fighting on Birmingham Hill drove the Americans from the field, but their heroic defensive stand saved WashingtonÕs army from destruction and proved that the nascent Continental foot soldiers could stand toe-to-toe with their foe. Although fighting would follow, Philadelphia fell to HoweÕs legions on September 26. HarrisÕs Brandywine is the first complete study to merge the strategic, political, and tactical history of this complex operation and important set-piece battle into a single compelling account. More than a decade in the making, his sweeping prose relies almost exclusively upon original archival research and his personal knowledge of the terrain. Enhanced with original maps, illustrations, and modern photos, and told largely through the words of those who fought there, Brandywine will take its place as one of the most important military studies of the American Revolution ever written."

Excerpt from The Battle of Brandywine: With Its Lines of Battle; The Old Flag's Baptism of Fire, Etc McCall Post, No. 31, G .A. R., West Chester, met Friday evening, June 30, A. D. 1900. The Committee on the Baptism of the American Flag in battle, and matters of interest generally relating to the history of the Battle of Brandywine made its report, through its Chairman, Col. F. C. Hooton, which we publish below, in full, because of its general interest. The Post also decided to erect a fine flag pole and fling to the breeze a beautiful flag at Sandy Hollow, on the farm of Henry Bennett, in commemoration of the heroic stand made there by General Greene's command, and the American dead who are buried there. The pole will be erected there on September 11 next, and the Secretary of War has been asked for a cannon to be placed there. Congressman Butler has been requested to look after this part of the matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A detailed study of the turning point in one of the most important battles in American history The Battle of Brandywine, fought on September 11, 1777, along its namesake creek in the bucolic Pennsylvania countryside, was one of the largest engagements of the Revolutionary War. To those who participated in this massive battle, spread out over ten square miles and lasting from late afternoon until dark, it was unforgettable. Soon after the action, Major Joseph Bloomfield of the 3rd New Jersey recorded that it was "the grandest scene I ever saw, a sight beyond description." Brandywine was the first major battle for the recently reorganized Continental Army. Units had fought in small engagements, but not until Brandywine did the army fight as a whole against the British. As the two armies clashed, a ferocious and desperate action developed on a hill at the heart of the battlefield, and it was here where the battle's outcome was determined. Despite its size and significance--Brandywine was the third bloodiest engagement of the war, with 1,300 American and 581 British casualties--the battle has been the subject of very few studies. In Decision at Brandywine: The Battle on Birmingham Hill, historian Robert M. Dunkerly analyzes the fighting near the Birmingham Meeting House where the battle turned. By dissecting the struggle on Birmingham Hill in detail, he offers a case study in weapons, tactics, and terrain analysis critical to a holistic understanding of the entire battle and what it would mean for the future of the Continental Army. In the process he not only explains how the Continental Army's lack of uniformed training and inexperience in large open-field battles played a major role in their defeat, but also provides important information about Revolutionary War combat in general.

Historian Thomas J. McGuire calls the Battle of Brandywine, on Sept. 11th, 1777, a turning point in the American Revolution and a case study in "strategy, generalship, and lost opportunities." The dawn-to-dusk battle saw several military milestones, but the only "first" that has never been fully documented is the story of how the Battle of Brandywine became the best historic example of the ebb and flow of battlefield preservation. This illustrated book is the first to tell the story of how generations of individuals - former soldiers, historians, county commissioners, and even Congressmen - worked to commemorate the battle and later to protect a 10-square-mile area ¬¬- centered in Birmingham and Pennsbury Townships - that officially became the Brandywine Battlefield National Historic Landmark (NHL) on January 20, 1961. Today the American Battlefield Protection Act, passed by Congress in 1996 has helped the Brandywine Battlefield Task Force to oversee the protection of what is now a 35,000 acre- battlefield landscape. The expanded protection is rooted in the idea that only open and intact land can reveal the military decisions that were made on that dark day in 1777.
