Spain, July 1938 The Republican army crosses the River Ebro in a last, forlorn attempt to change the course of the Spanish Civil war. The British Brigade is one of the first units to cross with orders to take the town of Corbera de Ebro and then push through the Sierra Caballs towards Gandesa. A young Brigadista, Martin Strachan, son of the famous war poet Lyndon Strachan, is amongst their number. He is wounded in a skirmish and left for dead in an abandoned house where a local girl called Julia finds him and decides to nurse him back to health. At the beginning of September the Nationalists begin to push the Republicans back towards the Ebro and the war returns once more to the Sierra Caballs with tragic consequences for Martin and Julia.

The last major Republican offensive of the Spanish Civil war, the Battle of the Ebro was a vitally important episode in the Spanish conflict and, although ultimately a Republican defeat, it proved a severe setback for the Nationalist forces under General Francesco Franco. According to many historians, it extended the war for an extra year. Here, the author investigates how, ultimately, it was probably the death knell of the Republic; their armies lost vast amounts of men and materials and they were left incapable of defending their remaining territory effectively. The consequences for Europe were immense.

A wonderfully rich and evocative biography of the great war photographer, Robert Capa, whose life was every bit as dramatic as the pictures he took.A Hungarian, Capa was driven from his country by political oppression and became the greatest war photographer of his generation with his work during the Spanish Civil War. His work during WWII made him a legend as he covered many of the significant moments of the war, crossing the Atlantic with the first convoys, enduring the London Blitz and following the Allies through North Africa, Italy and then the liberation of France. Founder of Magnum, he was one of the earliest casualties of what would become the Vietnam war, being killed in IndoChina in 1954. Friend of Hemingway, Gary Cooper, Gene Kelly, John Huston, lover of Ingrid Bergman, he is one of the great figures of the twentieth century. 'A tale rich with intrigue, love, lust, lies and betrayal...I loved this book' Janine di Giovanni 'Ambition, integrity and courage were intertwined in Capa, as Alex Kershaw persuades in this elegant biography ...a spellbinding portrait of his gypsy life.' Sunday Times 'Packed with good stories, and snappily written, Blood and Champagne is as full of life as the man it celebrates.' Observer 'Remarkably fine' Daily Telegraph

The Poem Of Fern N Gonz Lez written by Peter Such and has been published by Aris & Phillips this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Literary Criticism categories.

Fernan Gonzalez lived from about AD 910 to 970. The popular image of him is of a fearsome warrior who gave his people protection from their enemies (both Muslim and Christian), and a wise and respected lord who enabled them to live in security and harmony. He was generally accepted to have played a strategic role in achieving independence for Castile and freeing it from dominance by the kingdom of Leon. The Poema de Fernan Gonzalez was composed (by an unknown author) in the mid-thirteenth century as an enduring celebration of his triumphs and account of his life and deeds. Fact and legend have become intertwined and there is much within its stanzas that is certainly not closely based on historic facts! This new translation is set against a detailed study of the historic context of the Castillian conflicts and a factual account of the life and achievements of Fernan Gonzalez. The political situation of the time in which the poem was composed is also considered, as is the manner in which the 'history' it espouses came to be handed down over three centuries, the possibility of a pre-existing rich oral tradition surrounding this iconic figure, and the possible sources employed by the poet in constructing the poem.

We discover what civil war, revolution and counter-revolution actually felt like from inside both camps. The contours of the war take shape through the words of the eyewitnesses. The atmosphere of events is vividly recaptured. And though the lived experience of the participants is revealed the uniquely tragic essence of all civil war. 'Fascinating and brilliantly unorthodox. The tragedy that devastated Spain for 33 months from July 1936 to April 1939, was, first and foremost, a brutal fratricidal conflict, the product of the fatal clash between diametrically opposed views of Spain and an attempt to settle crucial issues which had divided Spaniards for generations: agrarian reform, recognition of the identity of the historical regions (Catalonia, the Basque Country), and the roles of the Catholic Church and the armed forces in a modern state. Being a war between Spaniards, it was particularly brutal, but it was also part of the broader move toward war in Europe and thus sucked in many “volunteers” from abroad. And it left a deep imprint since General Francisco Franco remained at the helm of the country until his death in 1975. The Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Civil war covers the history of the war, first through a long chronology, which highlights the major steps from the incubation to the conclusion. The overall situation is summed up in the introduction. Then the dictionary section fleshes it out, with over 600 entries on persons, places, events, institutions, battles, and campaigns. More reading can be found in an extensive bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Spanish Civil War.
