A concise and readable guide to the first--and still most important--case that tackled the constitutionality of prayer in public schools. The decision evoked an enormous outcry from a wide spectrum of society concerned about protecting religious practice in America and curbing an activist Supreme Court that many perceived to be too liberal and out-of-control.

What happens when a state board prescribes a prayer for public school children to recite in every classroom each morning as part of its program of moral and spiritual training? This question faced the U.S. Supreme Court in 1962 when they heard arguments in Engel v. Vitale. What some observers considered to be nothing more than a school tradition became the basis of a key constitutional question dealing with religious freedom and the meaning of separation of church and state in the United States. Engel v. Vitale serves as a useful primer of an issue that remains an emotionally charged one today. Combining absorbing profiles of key litigants with carefully selected full-color photographs, extensive footnotes, and a chronology and timeline, historian Shane Mountjoy provides excellent coverage of this decisive case.

Foremothers of twenty-first century activists such as Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter, these rightist women deeply influenced the path of U.S. politics after World War II. In Challenge and Change, June Benowitz draws on activists? letters to presidents, editors, and one another, allowing these women to speak for themselves. Benowitz examines the issues that stirred them to action?education, health, desegregation, moral corruption, war, patriotism, and the Equal Rights Amendment?and explores the growth of the right-wing women?s movement.

Battle Over The Bench written by Amy Steigerwalt and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-16 with Political Science categories.

Who gets seated on the lower federal courts and why? Why are some nominees confirmed easily while others travel a long, hard road to confirmation? What role do senators and interest groups play in determining who will become a federal judge? The lower federal courts have increasingly become the final arbiters of the important political and social issues of the day. As a result, who gets seated on the bench has become a major political issue. In Battle over the Bench, Amy Steigerwalt argues that the key to understanding the dynamics of the lower court confirmation process is to examine the process itself. She offers a new analytic framework for understanding when nominations become contested, and shows when and how key actors can influence the fate of nominations and ultimately determine who will become a federal judge. Given the increasing salience of lower court decisions, it is not surprising that interest groups and partisan agendas play an important role. Steigerwalt inventories the means by which senators push through or block nominations, and why interest groups decide to support or oppose certain nominations. The politics of judicial confirmations do not end there, however. Steigerwalt also reveals how many nominees are blocked for private political reasons that have nothing to do with ideology, while senators may use their support for or opposition to nominees as bargaining chips to garner votes for their positions on unrelated issues. Battle over the Bench showcases the complex and, at times, hidden motivations driving the staffing of the federal bench.

Many people have adopted stubbornness and rebellion as part of their nature. The first stronghold in the life of man has to do with rebellion in the heart. A small rebellion in one's heart will constitute a stronghold of Satan. Most Christians tend to resist any form of change in their lives, whereas a believer should change a lot of things to move forward. Without effecting changes, there can be no progress.

This volume explores dynamic conversations through history between individuals and communities over questions about religion and state. Divided into two sections, our authors begin with considerations on the separation of religion and state, as well as Roger Williams’ concept of religious freedom. Authors in the first half consider nuanced debates centered on emerging narratives, with particular emphasis on Native America, Early Americans, and experiences in American immigration after Independence. The first half of the volume examines voices in American History as they publicly engage with notions of secular ideology. Discussions then shift as the volume broadens to world perspectives on religion-state relations. Authors consider critical questions of nation, religious identity and transnational narratives. The intent of this volume is to privilege new narratives about religion-state relations. Decentering discussions away from national narratives allows for emerging voices at the individual and community levels. This volume offers readers new openings through which to understand critical but overlooked interactions between individuals and groups of people with the state over questions about religion.
