The Battle of Suomussalmi was a battle fought between Finnish and Soviet forces in the Winter War. The action took place from November 30, 1939, to January 8, 1940. The outcome was a Finnish victory against superior forces. This battle is considered the clearest, most important, and most significant Finnish victory in the northern half of Finland. In Finland, the battle is still seen today as a symbol of the entirety of Winter War itself. This documentary is a first-hand account of both the Battle of Suomussalmi and the Battle of Raate Road, northern Finland, written by the commander of the troops, General Siilasvuo. His book was published in 1940 and it provides a viewpoint both to tactical maneuvering of the troops and to fates of individual men. The value of the tactical maneuvering has not diminished over the years. The Finnish 'motti' - encircle and destroy - tactic is used in these two major battles. Several other books describe the details, Siilasvuo gives the overview. Maps are included to help to follow the chaotic battle.
