The theoretical base for visitor behavior research derives to a large extent from psychologist Edward Robinson. His monograph, The Behavior of the Museum Visitor, came out in 1928. Robinson and co-researcher, Arthur Melton, used observational methods, borrowed from psychology, to define behavior patterns within museums that could account for such things as why visitors perferred certain walls over others, why the traffic patterns within galleries were often predictable, why visitors frequently missed the most important exhibits, and why some styles of exhibitry were more successful in attracting or building attention than others.

Relationship Of Motivations Decision Making And Satisfaction In Museum Visitor Behavior written by Bethany Lynn England and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with categories.

ABSTRACT (cont.): The fact that museum visitors are primarily motivated to attend traveling exhibitions for education and exploration oriented reasons as well as the fact that museum exhibitions are a place where people are motivated to go for friends and family reasons is encouraging news to the museum. This study also demonstrated that people go to the museum for rest and relaxation, and that while they were not the primary motivation, this factor was still prevalent in these visitors. The decision-making analysis resulted in overwhelming shared decisions, which is helpful for museums to better understand their visitors and for marketing reasons as well as in the process of formation of partnerships with other area attractions. The satisfaction levels of the museum visitors to the "A T. Rex Named Sue" exhibition were very high which indicated that traveling exhibits are indeed a popular draw of visitors to a museum and that they deserve further investigation.

As the first book to take a "visitor's eye view" of the museum visit, The Museum Experience revolutionized the way museum professionals understand their constituents. Falk and Dierking integrate their original research from a wide variety of disciplines as well as visitor studies from institutions ranging from science centers and zoos to art and natural history museums. Written in clear, non-technical style, The Museum Experience paints a thorough picture of why people go to museums, what they do there, how they learn, and what museum practitioners can do to enhance these experiences. This book is an essential reference for all museum professionals and students of museum studies, and has been used widely for higher education courses in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., and has been translated into Japanese and Chinese. Originally published in 1992, the book is now available from Left Coast Press, Inc. as of November 2010.
