Excerpt from The Best Tour in Norway I Ought perhaps to apologies for the seemingly presumptuous title which I have given to this book. Let me say at once, then, that I do not for a moment claim for my narrative of travel any superiority to any other work that has been written about the beautiful land in which I spent four weeks in the summer of 1890 and three weeks in that of 1891, except in one respect. Having read many other books on the same subject and examined all the guide-books; having compared notes with many fellow-travellers and consulted the most competent resident authorities, both native and British, I have come to the conclusion that the route, which it was my good fortune to be enabled to follow in 1890, is the very best that can be adopted by those who wish to see as much as possible of the beauties of Western Norway within the space of three or four weeks, which is about the average holiday-time of most people. Excerpt from How to See Norway The following pages are little more than a re print of two papers on Norway, written by me for the Alpine Journal, viz. 'travelling in Norway' and Excursions in Norway, ' which appeared in the numbers for May 1868, and August 1870, respec tively. These articles have been carefully revised and corrected for the present work, and in many places I have inserted some remarks which were wanting in the originals. To the above papers I have now added a new chapter on the coast route between Throndhjem and Hammerfest, giving the mail steamers' time-table, correct for last year; and, in order to render the little volume more complete, a map of the greater portion of Norway is appended, whereon the principal routes noticed in the text are shown by red lines. All the engravings are from sketches of my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The lovely, narrow fjord with its mirror-like surface and miles of picturesque length, to gether with the towering peaks of the snow clad Jotun heim mountains seen in the distance, forms a View fairly unsurpassed in grandeur. Excerpt from The Fjords and Folk of Norway The geographical position of Norway, while affording all the grandeur and the stimulating rigour of the north, yet combines with it during the summer months, a mild and invigorating climate and a luxurious and varied vegetation unequalled in any northern country. It offers, too, a diversity of attractions. To the traveller and the nature lover, it throws open a region of natural as well as artistic beauty. On its mountains, and in its ice-carved valleys, the climber and the scientist find sport in plenty, and flora, fauna, and geological formation of the greatest interest and importance, while the fjords, lakes, and rivers offer unparalleled fishing possibilities. In the variety of its scenery may be observed nature in her severest moods: beautiful both under the stormy wind-swept sky or glorified by the sun; or the gentler beauties of green-walled valleys, rural homesteads, and the infinite charm of mountains, lakes, fjords, turbulent rivers, glaciers, forests, and the atmos pheric effects peculiar to these latitudes - factors which, with her nightless summers, combine in making Norway a land in every way ideal for holiday travel. Norway is to-day not only open to the traveller and the tourist, but it can ofier them a hospitality, a culture, and a civilisationwhich is of the most enlightened and advanced in Europe. As already stated, the sea has been the supreme modifier and developer of Norway, and the sea is, therefore, the appropriate highway by which Norway should be entered, and it is to this Norway of the sea, with its great and beautiful coast region, and of those true-born sons of the sea who people its shores, that the succeeding pages are devoted. Some association with Viking times is sure to confront the visitor to Norway's shores, and this, together with the increased, and increasing, interest in the civilisation of the Viking age, has been the inducement to dwell at some length on this absorbing subject in the historical section, and to add some notes of life in those times. Excerpt from Norway and Its Scenery: Comprising the Journal of a Tour by Edward Price, Esq., With Considerable Additions; And a Road-Book for Tourists, With Hints to Anglers and Sportsmen In addition to his success as an artist, Mr. Price is entitled to claim the merit Of having been among the first, and one of the few, travellers whose love of nature in her wildest and most solitary aspects has led them to undergo the fatigue and privations attending excursions which allow the liberty of wandering freely through unfrequented districts and pausing, as taste or fancy dictates, on scenes which might have been otherwise inaccessible, or passed with only a transient notice. Excerpt from Six Weeks in Norway We experienced a slight relief about mid night, when we stopped at Gothenburg; but when we were well out in the Skagerack, the' motions of the vessel and our discomforts were increased. Daylight brought no change, except the satisfaction of beholding the sufferings of. Each other. Excerpt from Diary of a Tour in Sweden, Norway, and Russia, Vol. 1: In 1827, With Letters There were a good many passengers, principally foreigners, returning home, and some English. We undressed at night, by which time we had got out to sea, and went regularly to bed, and slept quite comfortably till morning. Belgrave called me at half-past ten, I was soon up and dressed, and went to his cabin where we breakfasted; but the sea being a little rough, and as I was rather uncomfortable, I lay down in my cabin while Belgrave dined in his own. I came up afterwards, but it was cold and disagreeable. In the course of the day two little birds alighted on the deck, apparently quite ex hausted from fatigue; one of them flew away again, the other was caught and put into a cage; but it also died in half an hour afterwards.
