Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks is the lively and well documented story of the growth of the lake side community made famous by the incident that inspired Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. The rich history of the lake unfolds with stories of its early residents, hunters, and guides—Jim Higby, Billy Dutton, Henry Covey, and Bill Dartin—the late 1870s, of the lake's ownership by William Seward Webb, of the construction of the first private camp—Club Camp—in 1878, and the coming of hotels and resorts beginning in 1880 with the construction of Camp Crag. From a time when a telephone number was a simple "8F6" and the "pickle boat" brought supplies to camp, to more recent stories of exuberant waterskiing and motorboat regattas, the book includes a detailed history and descriptions of the camps and resorts on the lake, persons and celebrities who made the lake their year-round or seasonal home—including actress Minnie Maddern Fiske and artist David Milne—natural disasters and political events, recreation, and the work of the Big Moose Property Owners Association. This is the story of Big Moose Lake brought to life by more than 275 family photographs, antique postcards, and previously unpublished memoirs, oral histories, diary entries, and the personal correspondence of the men and women who settled the area and of those who call it home.

Of all crimes, murder fascinates the public more than any other. While considered a detestable act, for which society reserves its severest punishments, homicide still captivates the American public. But the way homicide and its investigation are depicted in our media fail to capture just how murders get solved. Here, Snow takes us on a tour of murder, its investigation, and its prosecution from the perspective of a seasoned homicide detective. From the commission of the crime to the collection of evidence, examination of the crime scene, roundup of suspects, interrogation, and resolution, he leads readers from the scene to the courtroom, stopping along the way to consider all the elements that go into a murder investigation. He considers the culprits, the motives, the victims and their families, and offers readers a glimpse into the actual techniques and methods used to solve real crimes. This volume will fascinate and inform anyone interested in knowing the truth behind the scene of the crime of murder.

Old Forge: Gateway to the Adirondacks is a pictorial history of the transformation of an eighteenth-century lakeside clearing in the wilderness into one of the premier recreational destinations in New York State's six-million-acre Adirondack Park. It is also the story of man's struggle with and passion for the natural world. During the nineteenth century, only a handful of rugged pioneer settlers and sportsmen endured the harrowing, inhospitable twenty-five-mile trek through the foothills of the Adirondack wild forests to the Old Forge lake region. Today, tens of thousands of camp owners and visitors come to share with local residents the magnificent landscapes of the Fulton Chain of Lakes and surrounding hamlets of McKeever, Okara, Thendara, Rondaxe, Big Moose, Eagle Bay, Inlet, and the Stillwater-Beaver River region.

The lakes of the Adirondack region are explored in this superb collection of masterful images, most of which are previously unpublished. The photographs in Adirondack Lakes were taken by well-known and lesser-known photographers of the region, including Seneca Ray Stoddard, George W. Baldwin, H. T. Hull, Katherine E. McClellan, William Kollecker, William L. Distin, and Henry M. Beach. Dating from 1858 to 1948, they are clear, focused, visually engaging, and historically significant. They show the men and women who developed the Adirondacks, from monied entrepreneurs to manual laborers, from hoteliers to roadside attendants, from vacationers to year-round residents-a cast of characters reflecting nearly a century of Adirondack activity.

It is a model of historical research that presents an unbiased picture of the rich diversity of a fascinating region.” — Frances Halsband, Kliment Halsband Architects
