Excerpt from The Biology of Birds The aim of this book, like that of the others in the series, is to illustrate biological ideas in reference to a particular group or class Of animals. In this case the selected class is that of birds, and the book applies to these fascinating creatures such biological concepts as adaptation, struggle, sex, heredity, variation, selec tion, and behaviour. There are many students of birds who are expert along particular lines, having, for instance, a personal familiarity with British birds and their ways, or an accurate knowledge of birds' bones or birds' eggs, or a detailed acquaintance with what is known in regard to distribution, migration, and the nature of the food, or a quite remarkable eye for flight, and ear for song. We have had the pleasure of learning much from some of these experts, a pleasure all the greater be cause the lover of birds is usually a delightful person to meet; perhaps we shall not be misunderstood if we say that this book is an attempt to unite all the specialisms in an amalgam of biological ideas. For those who have the good fortune to be nearer the beginning than the end of their studies, our book may be, we hope, of use in suggesting the length and breadth, the depth and height of the Biology of Birds. Excerpt from The Biology of Poultry Keeping If these five things are realized in a poultry house the birds will thrive and be productive in it, provided they are well and regularly fed and watered. It makes no difference particularly to the well - being of the birds how these necessary specifications of their dwelling are attained. To the poultryman, however. It is important that they be attained at the smallest expense, hav ing regard to (a) initial cost. (b) repairs and up - keep and (cl labor necessary to operate the house to get the specified results The housing problem is to the poultryman, then. Both a biologi cal and an economic one. The biological solution is definite. The requisites named above must be met, and there is one addi tional factor to be taken into account: namely size of house. Experiments made at various times and places indicate clearly that in northern climates, where birds must be shut up in the house during a part, of the Year in order to give best results. There should be allowed in the house at least three square feet of floor space per bird and preferably a little more. Four square feet floor space per bird is a liberal allowance. Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History: Birds IN this Work I have continued to carry out the same plan which has been employed in the previous volume descriptive of the Mammalia, giving to the body of the work a popular and anecdotal character, and reserving the more scientific portions for the Compendium of Generic Distinctions at the end of the volume. Much pains has been taken with that part of the work, for which I am in a great degree indebted to the invaluable Genera of Birds by Dr. Gray, a work which has long established itself as the standard of systematic Ornithology as at present accepted by the learned world. The system employed, and the names that are given 111 this work, are those which have been sanctioned by the usage of the national collection in the British Museum; and any one who wishes to study the Birds in a systematic manner can accomplish his object by taking this volume to the Museum, and comparing the specimens with the history of the species in the body of the work, and the characteristic distinctions of the genera at its end. By means of this Table, also, any one can ascertain the approximate position which any bird holds in the system of the present day. Excerpt from Migration of Birds Frederick C. Lincoln's classic work on the Migration of Birds first appeared in 1935. It was revised in 1950 and has been out of print for several years, after selling over copies. Unfilled requests by many individuals, clubs, and institutions prompted the Office of Conservation Education (now the Office of Public Affairs) in the us. Fish and Wildlife Service to petition another update for reissue. This publication incorporates the results gathered by research biologists in the us. Fish and Wildlife Service to meet these requests. Lincoln's original intent was to present to the American public a summary of the facts on bird migration as they existed in the early 1930's. He wrote with a style that made the topic fascinating to the young and old, to the educated and uninformed, and to the ardent observer as well as the backyard watcher. An attempt has been made to retain this style, while incorporating material from often highly technical research efforts. Much of the content and organization of the original publication has been maintained, but new sections were added to incorporate recent concepts and techniques. Other concepts, known to be inconsistent with present knowledge, have been deleted. Because graphics are of utmost importance in this type of publication, most of the original figures were preserved and, where appropriate, new illustrations have been added. Excerpt from A Book of Birds It is owing to the fact that these peculiarities are not generally known, that most writers of books on birds inaccurately speak of the legs and toes of a bird, when by the legs they refer really only to the long cannon-bones, which are clad in scales and often brightly coloured. A reference to the accompanying diagram should make this clear. Here we have the leg of a fowl. The first joint is formed by the hinging of the femur, or thigh-bone, with the tibia, thus forming the knee-joint. At the end of this tibia the joint with the ankle bone takes place but in the birds, as we have said, the two rows which these small bones make up disappear before adult life is reached. One row, as may be seen in fig. 1, is composed, in the half-grown bird, of a mallet-like piece, the handle of which runs up the front of the tibia or shank, and becomes welded to the shank while the other (fig. I), originally of several small pieces composed in the embryo, but now forming a thin plate, becomes welded on to the top of the bones of the foot. It is these last which are always, but wrongly, described as the leg-bones. Really, they answer to the bones of our own feet which lie between the ankle and the toes. The tibia, and the fused row of ankle-bones, is known as the tibio-tarsus. The toes present peculiarities, which will be described as we proceed.
