Twins are probably by no means unknown to most people - for instance in the sporting world of my Australian homeland there are quite a number of cases of note - yet very few people understand the biology behind twins. Although this book suffers a good deal from its age - people like Tim Flannery, Tom McMahon, John Rushton, and Michael Laker clearly give evidence that there is something much more "designed" than randomness involved in dizygotic twin frequencies around the world - if you want a basic introduction to the facts about twinning in humans you will get it here without any doubt. Bulmer deals with every aspects of twinning from the frequency of twinning in humans to the liabilities mothers of twins face vis-à-vis those of single children. He also goes into less common detail about the extreme difficulties of higher order multiple births - and provides little-known but easily understandable details about their frequency. Bulmer shows that for most of human history mothers of twins were at huge disadvantages both in terms of their much greater health risks and the low birth mass and short gestation of their children. For this reason, Bulmer shows that only when major health improvements were made could twins compete with singleton children, and he shows this had and has major consequences culturally. Another very interesting sidelight is Bulmer's look at how single birthing evolved as the most productive strategy in humans and other primates (except for the primitive tree shrews). Bulmer compares this with the situation in animals that typically give birth to multiple young. He should, however, have looked at the environmental conditions that encourage singleton births and compare with those animals that give birth to multiple, highly precocial offspring. All in all, though it is certainly dated, "Biology of Twinning in Man" is a simple and useful overview of what most people should know about multiple births in humans.

Excerpt from The Biology of Twins (Mammals) The present volume brings together for the first time a considerable mass of data dealing with the phenomenon of twins in man and other mammals. Twins are so inherently interesting to so many people that it is hoped by the writer that some light on how twins "happen" will be welcomed by the general reader as well as by the biologist. There are many thoroughly interesting and nontechnical phases of twin-biology that will appeal to anyone who is a twin or has personal acquaintance with twins. There must be certain other phases of the subject, however, that are largely of value to the professional biologist. It has been the aim of this book to satisfy both the general and the technical reader without sacrificing unduly the demands of simplicity on the one hand or of scientific adequacy on the other. If not for the work of his half cousin Francis Galton, Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory might have met a somewhat different fate. In particular, with no direct evidence of natural selection and no convincing theory of heredity to explain it, Darwin needed a mathematical explanation of variability and heredity. Galton's work in biometry—the application of statistical methods to the biological sciences—laid the foundations for precisely that. This book offers readers a compelling portrait of Galton as the "father of biometry," tracing the development of his ideas and his accomplishments, and placing them in their scientific context. Though Michael Bulmer introduces readers to the curious facts of Galton's life—as an explorer, as a polymath and member of the Victorian intellectual aristocracy, and as a proponent of eugenics—his chief concern is with Galton's pioneering studies of heredity, in the course of which he invented the statistical tools of regression and correlation. Bulmer describes Galton's early ambitions and experiments—his investigations of problems of evolutionary importance (such as the evolution of gregariousness and the function of sex), and his movement from the development of a physiological theory to a purely statistical theory of heredity, based on the properties of the normal distribution. This work, culminating in the law of ancestral heredity, also put Galton at the heart of the bitter conflict between the "ancestrians" and the "Mendelians" after the rediscovery of Mendelism in 1900. A graceful writer and an expert biometrician, Bulmer details the eventual triumph of biometrical methods in the history of quantitative genetics based on Mendelian principles, which underpins our understanding of evolution today.

How New Humans Are Made written by Charles E. Boklage and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Embryology, Human categories.

It is not okay to call something a miracle without even trying to understand it. This is human developmental biology (human embryology, in terms of cells and molecules) for everyone curious enough to see it through, from the perspective of the business of becoming human as individuals and as species; making new humans; how it happens (cells do it, ALL of it); and common variations of the process. It cannot be made quite simple and be kept quite true, but we will move as far toward simple as we can without losing touch with sound evidence. Variations from the normal version of the process, particularly malformations and twinning and chimerism, figure prominently in the story because there is no better way to learn about the usual than to study the unusual and see what differences in the endings these observable differences at the beginnings can make. In this book, when technical terminology is the only way, or the best way, to say what needs to be said, it is defined and explained making the words a worthwhile part of what is here to be learned. This book defines its own new field. We cannot claim to understand how anything human] works as human], with no effort at understanding the emergence of its form and functions. Old and new unanswered questions are waiting to be dug out from under old unquestioned answers about how becoming human unfolds. We will also address some popular and weighty, but deeply empty assertions about the circumstances and mechanisms of our beginnings and our ceaseless becoming. We will find fundamental questions from the humanities' unanswerable except from biology. Human developmental biology is a foundational discipline within the humanities.
