Excerpt from The Bird-Book Who can be found, in the wide world, that has never felt any interest in birds? Or that has never listened for a moment to their songs, nor watched their graceful movements, nor admired their beautiful form and plumage? Alas! That any should be found who, for mere amusement, can silence their soft and joyous notes, mangle their curious frames, or rob and destroy their inimitable dwellings. Excerpt from The Bird Its Form and Function Far too many students of birds follow some such mode of procedure as this: When a new bird is found, it is shot, labelled, preserved in a collection and forgotten; or, if studying the bird with a glass, all effort is centred in finding some characteristic by which it can be named, and, succeeding in this, search is at once made for still another species, whose name can in turn be added to a list. Observing the habits, the courtship and nest-building, and memorizing the song, is a third phase of bird-study the best of all three methods; but few indeed have ever given a moment's thought to the bird itself. Excerpt from Bird World: A Bird Book for Children It may be of interest to some of our readers to know under what guidance they are to make this little journey into the borders of Bird World. First, then, the plan and direction come from the author of some books they have known as the Stickney Readers. It may be thought worth while to venture on this new pleasure trip under the same leadership. Second, a gentleman has been found to act as special conductor, - one who has lived closer to Bird World than any of us. For years he has known by sight and sound all our New England birds, and many, if not most, of our chance summer and winter visitors, beside having particularly intimate acquaintance with some which we too shall be glad to meet. A number of the stories which follow are based upon his own personal observations. You will find his name upon the title page. He is a director in the Audubon Society for the Protection of Birds, which makes it certain that the citizens of Bird World are as safe in his hands as are we. You have thus the combined powers of two who are both friends of young people and of birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Bird-Life To compress the Story of bird-life within the limits of the present little work has been no easy task. The object aimed at has been to present the main features of bird-life in a general way. Hence it is hoped this volume may prove of interest to bird-lovers the world over, not be cause it contains information about the birds of any particular 'neighbourhood or country; but rather, because it serves as a guide to What should be looked for, and recorded, of the life history of birds Wherever they may be met with. Even dwellers in the sordid city have some material upon Which they may exercise their powers of observation. Excerpt from The Sportsman's British Bird Book The illustrations, which speak for themselves, are absolutely true to nature, having, in the great majority of instances, been photographed under the personal superintendence of Mr. Rowland Ward from specimens mounted at his studios in Piccadilly for this particular purpose. A considerable number of these specimens have been pre sented by Mr. Ward to the Natural History Museum, where they are exhibited in the British Saloon at the end of the Bird Gallery. A novel feature is the omission of the names of authorities and Observers of the facts recorded in this volume, many of whom are unknown to the general public. This is justified by the circum stance that when a statement has once been published it becomes public property. In certain books on the same subject it has been attempted to draw a distinction between birds which can properly be regarded as British and those which cannot lay a claim to such a privilege. Any such distinction is, however, manifestly an impossibility, and all the species are accordingly treated in serial order, although such as are mere stragglers are not accorded insets of their own in the text. The introduction of a certain number of technical terms relating to the plumage, such as wing-coverts, primary and secondary quills, etc., is unavoidable. The meaning of these - as well as of other terms used in scientific ornithology - will, however, be made apparent at a glance by the diagrammatic sketch of the topography of a bird's plumage on page xviii. In future editions, should such be called for, it will be the special aim of both the publisher and author to keep the work up to date.
