What if you discovered you had a secret power? This enchanting middle-grade novel reveals the strengths that lie in our differences. The Birdfish and the Secret of Crystal Island is a children's story about feeling in between two different worlds. The author tackles the experience of growing up in both Eastern and Western countries, as well as the feeling of twoness and not fully belonging, through the lens of Staraku, who can both swim and fly, but is rejected by both birds and fish. After attempting to blend in with the birds and ending up rejected once more, Staraku sets off from the island she calls home to find somewhere else to live. She meets a creature called Agumus during her travels, who gifts her a magical protective crystal and takes the role of her teacher. With him, she learns to embrace the light, how to talk to trees, and begins to wonder about her purpose. She returns to her island to find the birds and fish fighting. Staraku braves intervening, and by helping the birds and fish overcome disaster, teaches the two groups how to work together and appreciate their differences. Together, they rebuild the island and Staraku meets other misfits like her. She and Agumus teach together, and Staraku has found her purpose.

This book addresses for the first time four major rock art areas of West Papua: the Berau Gulf, Bitsyari Bay, Triton Bay and the Baliem Valley. Together, they form one of the richest regions of rock art and include many newly discovered sites. These sites, located along the South Coast and in the Baliem Highlands, contain thousands of paintings. This book presents, for the first time, hundreds of original photographs including hand stencils, matutuo, faces, and abstract motifs found in West Papua. It also compiles existing hypotheses on the antiquity and origins of rock art in the region and tries to offer a stimulus for further research

Darwin Inspired Learning written by Carolyn J. Boulter and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-19 with Education categories.

Charles Darwin has been extensively analysed and written about as a scientist, Victorian, father and husband. However, this is the first book to present a carefully thought out pedagogical approach to learning that is centered on Darwin’s life and scientific practice. The ways in which Darwin developed his scientific ideas, and their far reaching effects, continue to challenge and provoke contemporary teachers and learners, inspiring them to consider both how scientists work and how individual humans ‘read nature’. Darwin-inspired learning, as proposed in this international collection of essays, is an enquiry-based pedagogy, that takes the professional practice of Charles Darwin as its source. Without seeking to idealise the man, Darwin-inspired learning places importance on: • active learning • hands-on enquiry • critical thinking • creativity • argumentation • interdisciplinarity. In an increasingly urbanised world, first-hand observations of living plants and animals are becoming rarer. Indeed, some commentators suggest that such encounters are under threat and children are living in a time of ‘nature-deficit’. Darwin-inspired learning, with its focus on close observation and hands-on enquiry, seeks to re-engage children and young people with the living world through critical and creative thinking modeled on Darwin’s life and science.

"Its publication should be a major event for cognitive linguistics and should pose a major challenge for cognitive science. In addition, it should have repercussions in a variety of disciplines, ranging from anthropology and psychology to epistemology and the philosophy of science. . . . Lakoff asks: What do categories of language and thought reveal about the human mind? Offering both general theory and minute details, Lakoff shows that categories reveal a great deal."—David E. Leary, American Scientist
