Fairy tales. Prince Charming fights evil, wins the princess, lives happily ever after. Three sons, three wishes, witches, dragons, a quest, and happily ever after. These stories are part of our cultural fabric. The stories change in retellings to reflect contemporary culture, such as Princess Charming, or heroes and heroines as people of color. In this collection, queer characters take center stage in stories that grew out of questions: What if the prince falls in love with Cinderella's gay stepbrother? What if Rumpelstiltskin doesn't really want the Queen's child but rather the King himself? What if Beauty and the Beast are two men? These stories explore metaphors of magic and the magical, this time, with a gay perspective. What price must be paid for happily ever after? Duty or love? Is love worth great sacrifice? Once upon a time ...

The Persistence Of Taste written by Malcolm Quinn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-11 with Social Science categories.

This book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of the social practice of taste in the wake of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of taste. For the first time, this book unites sociologists and other social scientists with artists and curators, art theorists and art educators, and art, design and cultural historians who engage with the practice of taste as it relates to encounters with art, cultural institutions and the practices of everyday life, in national and transnational contexts. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section on ‘Taste and art’, shows how art practice was drawn into the sphere of ‘good taste’, contrasting this with a post-conceptualist critique that offers a challenge to the social functions of good taste through an encounter with art. The next section on ‘Taste making and the museum’ examines the challenges and changing social, political and organisational dynamics propelling museums beyond the terms of a supposedly universal institution and language of taste. The third section of the book, ‘Taste after Bourdieu in Japan’ offers a case study of the challenges to the cross-cultural transmission and local reproduction of ‘good taste’, exemplified by the complex cultural context of Japan. The final section on ‘Taste, the home and everyday life’ juxtaposes the analysis of the reproduction of inequality and alienation through taste, with arguments on how the legacy of ideas of ‘good taste’ have extended the possibilities of experience and sharpened our consciousness of identity. As the first book to bring together arts practitioners and theorists with sociologists and other social scientists to examine the legacy and continuing validity of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of taste, this publication engages with the opportunities and problems involved in understanding the social value and the cultural dispositions of taste ‘after Bourdieu’. It does so at a moment when the practice of taste is being radically changed by the global expansion of cultural choices, and the emergence of deploying impersonal algorithms as solutions to cultural and creative decision-making.

Leonora Brito was a writer of exceptional stories. Her professional creative life covered a relatively short period of time, from the early 1990s to her death in 2007, during which she produced an acclaimed collection of short fiction, Dat's Love, in addition to writing for radio and television. Brito's stories engage primarily with the Cardiff of her youth, most notably the Docks and Tiger Bay. She was the first of a group of writers who heralded a feminist renaissance in short story writing in Wales. Her stories are full of light and life, and the descriptions are marked by an unusual exactness and sense of place. They are unique in Welsh fiction in that they present an insider s perspective on a Black history and culture of Wales only alluded to by other writers. She was working on a second collection at the time her death. Full of wry humour and startling originality, this collection features some of Brito's most acclaimed stories, including 'Mama's Baby (Papa's Maybe)', 'The Last Jumpshot', and 'Dat's Love', which won the 1991 Rhys Davies Short Story Prize.

"The Black Monk" is a poignant quick story by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. This narrative explores the delicate balance between fact and imagination, delving into the mental complexities of human thoughts. The tale revolves around Andrey Vasilievich Kovrin, a talented and bold scholar who isolates himself in a geographical region to focus on his work. As Kovrin becomes more and more absorbed in his studies, he starts to enjoy bright hallucinations and dreams related to a mysterious black monk. This enigmatic figure serves as a manifestation of Kovrin's heightened highbrow and creative aspirations. As the road between reality and imagination blurs, Kovrin's intellectual kingdom unravels. The tale unfolds as a mental drama, examining the satisfactory line between genius and madness. Chekhov skillfully explores themes of creativity, the pursuit of understanding, and the dangers of unchecked ambition. "The Black Monk" is well known for its nuanced portrayal of the human psyche and its exploration of the thin boundary between inspiration and intellectual instability. Chekhov's storytelling prowess shines through as he crafts a narrative that invites readers to reflect on the difficult interaction of dreams, truth, and the toll of intellectual pursuit on the fragile material of the mind.
