'Tagore picks up the flotsam of a love story from the Ganga and narrates it like only he can. An eternal human story.'- GulzarAfter a boat-wreck overturns his life, Rameshchandra Chowdhury mistakes young Kamala for his newly wedded bride. They move away from Calcutta to start a domestic life together, even as Ramesh is unable to forget Hemnalini, whom he was always in love with, but could not marry. Meanwhile, Hemnalini must steel her heart, while her hypochondriac father and hot-headed brother seek grooms for her. When Nalinaksha, a serene and influential doctor, enters the scene, fate decides to rock the boats again. Initially serialized in Bangadarshan magazine between 1903 and 1904, and then published as a novel in 1906, Noukadoobi was Tagore's exercise in psychoanalytical probing of an ensemble cast of characters, to reveal not just their individual pains and passions, but also the collective consciousness of the society of the period. Narrated in warm tones that reveal the tenderness of everyday life, and translated gracefully by Arunava Sinha, here is a story about love and sacrifice, faith and resilience that is timeless.

Excerpt from The Wreck of the Homeward-Bound, or the Boat of Mercy When we reflect how' many thousands of vessels annually leave our ports, and return from distant countries, while thousands more, engaged in home trade, are continually sweeping around our shores, we must feel it a matter of no surprise that shipwrecks occur so frequently; but, at the same time, it is a matter of extreme - regret that the results are oftentimes so deplorable. The Forgotten Shipwreck is the true story of the boat which sank the day after England won the World Cup. It spans so many facets, from a village numbed, with whole families wiped out, to angry exchanges in the House of Commons and law courts. There is intrigue, chicanery, deceit, incompetence and greed. It had far-reaching ramifications and yet, for all that, the Darlwyne tragedy lacked an ending. On Thursday 4 August 1966 the sea began to give up its dead. The relatives of twelve of the thirty-one people who had set out on a pleasure trip on 31 July could at least temper their grief to some small extent with the fact that their remains had been found. The loved ones of the other nineteen would have no such solace. Some fifty years later a team of divers, archaeologists, filmmakers, photographers and wreck researchers set about to change that. By piecing together eyewitness accounts, news stories, court proceedings, weather reports and archive material, and by applying modern methods and underwater search techniques would they be able to succeed where the original search mission had been unable? Could they unravel the mystery of complicated waters and pinpoint the final resting place of the Darlwyne?

Torn In Two written by Michael Schumacher and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-29 with History categories.

Dennis Hale reached the dock just in time to see the Daniel J. Morrell heading out to open waters, a 600-foot freighter that had plied the waters for sixty years, carrying ore from Minnesota’s Iron Range to steel firms around the Great Lakes. The twenty-six-year-old watchman had, quite literally, missed the boat—which meant scrambling to rejoin the Morrell at its next stop or forfeiting a good chunk of his pay package. Seventy-two hours later, Hale would find himself clinging to a life raft alongside the frozen bodies of his crewmates in the violent waves of Lake Huron. The boat would not be reported missing for another twenty-seven hours and by the time the life raft was found, Dennis Hale would remain as the sole survivor of the wreck of the Daniel J. Morrell. This is life-and-death drama on the inland sea as only Michael Schumacher can tell it. In Torn in Two the great Lakes historian recreates the circumstances surrounding the terrible storm of November 29, 1966, that broke the mighty freighter in half, sending twenty-five of the Morrell’s twenty-nine-man crew to their deaths and consigning the surviving four to the freezing raft where all but Hale would perish. At the heart of Torn in Two are the terrible hours spent by Hale on the life raft with his crewmen, clinging to life for thirty-eight hours in freezing temperatures and wearing only a peacoat, life jacket, and boxer shorts. The fight to save Hale and find the others, the Coast Guard hearings into what happened, the discovery of the wreckage—Schumacher’s vivid narrative captures every harrowing detail and curious fact of the Morrell’s demise, finally doing justice to this epic shipwreck fifty years past.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ...I found the objects I was in search of in the bank in which I had deposited them. These I removed, and, bringing them with me, retraced my steps to Austra Beach, where I arrived after much fatigue. The distance of Sidney Cove from Austra Beach is about ten miles; and as I had been much reduced in strength by long fasting and insufficient food for some days, in conjunction with an almost sleepless night, towards the close of my journey I could scarcely place one foot before another; and when I reached our boat was glad to avail myself of what provision my companions had prepared for me and of what rest I could obtain. During my absence the remainder of the party had brought the oars, spars, and other things from the opposite side of the " haul-over," and deposited them near the boat to be in readiness when we next launched her. Here we remained some days, detained as usual by stress of weather and violent winds which prevented our crossing the bay; but as soon as the wind abated and the atmosphere became more settled and favourable we dismantled our hut, launched the boat, and putting some additional spars found upon the shore into it, in conjunction with those we formerly had, we pulled across the bay and landed on the opposite side, between Captain Matley's Island and the Bluffs, which were more to the eastward. Here we again hauled our boat up, and built her into a hut rj usual, intending to use this as our night-station for a time until we had removed our building materials to Long Point, where we had determined upon erecting our house. After a day or two of rest we proceeded with our work, which now consisted in carrying the spars, &c, to their destination, and in doing this we had to travel along the series of stony...
