This book presents the results of a large-scale experiment into interpretations of the metaphor “the Nation as a Body” among 1,800+ respondents from 30 linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In this first account of an empirical study of cross-cultural global metaphor interpretation of that scale, Musolff confirms that the meanings of metaphors are complex, culturally mediated and may differ for senders and recipients. The book provides a historical and cultural map of the traditions underlying differences in how the nation as a body – or, “the body politic” – is understood. Musolff challenges the hypotheses of the universality of “the nation” as a predominantly male-gendered and hierarchically organized concept and, in so doing, puts into question some of the key presuppositions of traditional historical and cognitive approaches to metaphor. For scholars and students of figurative language, the book lays out methodological foundations for cross-cultural metaphor comparison and reveals hidden meaning differences in political metaphor in English as lingua franca.

The unforgettable introduction to the human body that continues to inspire new generations of doctors Awesome and magnificent as the body itself, here is the one book that explains the mysteries of human anatomy – from head to heart; muscles to metabolism; bones to blood and beyond – in a way certain to captivate. It cuts through jargon and transcends the ordinary to let you get to know all about your body: how it adapts, how it protects itself, how it senses the world, how it grows. An indispensable book for everyone who has ever felt a sense of wonder for the remarkable machine that remains infinitely superior to every human invention. Praise for The Body Has a Head: "Anyone with an interest in body and mind will be well rewarded by reading what Eckstein has so painstakingly crafted. He lays out the real-world framework of what we are and the historical means and people by which we got that knowledge, all couched in a writing style that's unusual, marvellous, apt, and inviting." "This is a rare book to find, and utterly brilliant. Gustav Eckstein is the Oliver Sacks of the past. A doctor whose writing about the body, disease and health is utterly entertaining, and genius. If you can get your hands on a copy, do." "A refreshing approach to human anatomy! A priceless combination of scientific information and history balanced with clever comparisons and analogies. Eckstein's light approach and simple phrasing allow for easy reading while providing enormous amounts of information." Editorial reviews: “Comes close to genius and fails only for reaching too far, and that is a gorgeous way to fail.” Newsweek “The scope of this book is nothing less than the scope of man.” Newsweek “An endlessly enchanting, stimulating work of high literary value.” Modern Medicine “Stimulating . . . profound . . . vivid.” Wall Street Journal “A modern classic.” Columbus Dispatch “As lively as life itself, as surprising in its twists and turns as a roller-coaster ride, as humane and lucidly down to earth as a book can be.” Saturday Review

A Finalist for the National Book Award When Ada leaves home for her freshman year at a Historically Black College, it’s the first time she’s ever been so far from her family—and the first time that she’s been able to make her own choices and to seek her place in this new world. As she stumbles deeper into the world of dance and explores her sexuality, she also begins to wrestle with her past—her mother’s struggle with addiction, her Nigerian father’s attempts to make a home for her. Ultimately, Ada discovers she needs to brush off the destiny others have chosen for her and claim full ownership of her body and her future. “Candice Iloh’s beautifully crafted narrative about family, belonging, sexuality, and telling our deepest truths in order to be whole is at once immensely readable and ultimately healing.”—Jacqueline Woodson, New York Times Bestselling Author of Brown Girl Dreaming “An essential—and emotionally gripping and masterfully written and compulsively readable—addition to the coming-of-age canon.”—Nic Stone, New York Times Bestselling Author of Dear Martin “This is a story about the sometimes toxic and heavy expectations set onthe backs of first-generation children, the pressures woven into the familydynamic, culturally and socially. About childhood secrets with sharp teeth. And ultimately, about a liberation that taunts every young person.” —Jason Reynolds, New York Times Bestselling Author of Long Way Down

Sanskrit Of The Body written by William Keckler and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-27 with Poetry categories.

In this mesmerizing debut collection, chosen by Mary Oliver for the National Poetry Series, we’re witness to an expansive travelogue of the human spirit that moves throughtfully through multiples ages, cultures, and beings. Each poem explores in depth, through pensive, evocative images, aspects of the human condition and their place within the rich continuum of animal existence. W.B. Keckler presents these poems in a fugal form, uniting the individual works in what he describes as a “holistic formalism” that reveals the poems’ powerful collective meaning. Lives and afterlives are explored with equal care as Keckler attempts to restore the concept of “spirit” in a modern world often overwhelmed by materialistic priorities. “Readers will find these poems lively and pleasurable. They are deft and rich in language, grounded in the actual—even the ordinary—yet admitting into their brief structures a deeper existence of strangeness, or mystery. Which is to say, that they have entered the true realm of the poetry. In a literary age pleached with sameness, this book is a bright and swirling original.”—Mary Oliver
