'The Book of Changes: A Modern Adaptation and Interpretation' attempts to breathe new life into the Book of Changes by making it relevant to the present time and day. It does so by using archaeological evidence to trace the origins of the Book of Changes, starting with numeric trigrams and hexagrams, making its way up to early divination manuals, and ending with the oldest extant version of the Books of Changes—usually referred to as the ‘received version.’ It also explains the development of the Book of Changes from a divination manual into a philosophical text dealing with change. However, its main focus is on delineating sixty-four patterns of change in the Book of Changes, patterns based on novel metaphorical interpretations of the line texts in the Book of Changes that serve as the foundation for a new handbook on change. Each metaphorical interpretation consists of 1) a hexagram and the Chinese character associated with it, 2) a ‘description’ of the hexagram, 3) the Chinese characters for the line texts, 4) translations of the line texts, 5) a general interpretation of the line texts based on those translations, 6) and some explanatory notes that attempt to clarify each interpretation. Translations and the interpretations based on those translations reference Traditional and Modernist understandings of the line text materials, ancient texts/dictionaries/lexicons from the period when the Book of Changes was compiled, and the ideas of the author as he works to create a new Chinese ‘philosophy of change,’ complete with examples of how it can be adapted in modern-day life. The clear and concise general introduction to the Book of Changes that is incorporated into this work, the many interpretations of the line texts contained in it, and a popular philosophical content make this book a welcome addition to the field and will attract interested scholars and teachers, engage business people or those looking to better understand Chinese culture, and appeal to those focused on spirituality and holistic living.

The symbols used in the I Ching or Yi Jing as it's pronounced in Mandarin have been found engraved in tortoise shells that were carbon dated as being around five thousand years old. It has been successfully used for advise on military affairs and even medical situations. You could skip to the section on getting a question answered if you're in a hurry, or you could take the time to study in detail all the intricate associations so you can better understand the answer you get from what has been called the most accurate oracle system in the world. The original method for consulting the I-Ching was to put turtle or tortoise shells into a bonfire and roast them until they cracked and interpret the cracks. When the turtle and tortoise populations started dwindling other methods were adopted. Some people memorize the associations of the trigrams to interpret the symbols perceived in their environment and predict their immediate future, but most people ask a question and using a stick sorting or coin flipping method build a hexagram representing their answer from the bottom up. There's even a card drawing method, though that's considered less accurate, and a compass needle dowsing method that have been used. Here we'll discuss the stick sorting and coin flipping methods.

A translation of a key commentary on perhaps the most broadly influential text of classical China This book is a translation of a key commentary on the Book of Changes, or Yijing (I Ching), perhaps the most broadly influential text of classical China. The Yijing first appeared as a divination text in Zhou-dynasty China (ca. 1045–256 bce) and later became a work of cosmology, philosophy, and political theory as commentators supplied it with new meanings. While many English translations of the Yijing itself exist, none are paired with a historical commentary as thorough and methodical as that written by the Confucian scholar Cheng Yi, who turned the original text into a coherent work of political theory.

The books in this two-volume series present the most important tools and information on how to utilize the"Book of Changes(I Ching)."The"Book of Sun and Moon, "an alternative-though accurate-translation for the title of the"I Ching, "is both a book of divination and calculation. Its use in divination means to apply intuition concerning the oracle of the hexagrams (the sixty-four images of broken and unbroken Yin-and-Yang lines). Its ability to calculate and determine possible outcomes for any situation involves examining the logical correlations associated with each of the hexagrams and what images they change into and head toward. Using the"Book of Sun and Moon"is like being a detective or tracker. The images are the clues and tracks, and a good detective or tracker needs not only tools of deduction and observation, but also a strong sense of intuition. Hence, the"Book of Sun and Moon"provides the main tools for both. Some questions put to the"Book of Sun and Moon"may only seem to need an understanding of the oracle portion, while others may only seem to require the use of logic and calculation. Without applying both intuition and logic, however, you are only receiving half the picture and limiting the amount of information the"Book of Sun and Moon"can provide. Volume I contains background historical information and explanations of the"I Ching's" construction and uses for divination and calculation. Volume II contains the translations of the original"Book of Sun and Moon, "along with specific correlations for the hexagrams and trigrams for interpretation, as well as Stuart Alve Olson's commentaries derived from various Chinese sources. These new editions of the"Book of Sun and Moon"provide a distinctly Daoist perspective on the work, which sets them apart from the majority of other translations of the"I Ching"that contain commentaries based on Confucian ideals and philosophy.

Both in the sheer breadth and in the detail of their coverage the essays in these two volumes challenge hegemonic thinking on the subject of translation. Engaging throughout with issues of representation in a postmodern and postcolonial world, Translating Others investigates the complex processes of projection, recognition, displacement and 'othering' effected not only by translation practices but also by translation studies as developed in the West. At the same time, the volumes document the increasing awareness the the world is peopled by others who also translate, often in ways radically different from and hitherto largely ignored by the modes of translating conceptualized in Western discourses. The languages covered in individual contributions include Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Rajasthani, Somali, Swahili, Tamil, Tibetan and Turkish as well as the Europhone literatures of Africa, the tongues of medieval Europe, and some major languages of Egypt's five thousand year history. Neighbouring disciplines invoked include anthropology, semiotics, museum and folklore studies, librarianship and the history of writing systems. Contributors to Volume 1: Doris Bachmann-Medick, Cosima Bruno, Ovidi Carbonell, Martha Cheung, G. Gopinathan, Eva Hung, Alexandra Lianeri, Carol Maier, Christi Ann Marrill, Paolo Rambelli, Myriam Salama-Carr, Ubaldo Stecconi and Maria Tymoczko.
