Education made him a zoologist, but nature stepped ih, and claimed him for a poet; he has dutifully stretched out a hand to the one fostermother and to the other. Peter Christen Asbjernsen was born at Christiania on the lgth of January, 1812. Of his life at school his biographers have told us nothing, and yet there must be something worth telling about it, for there, when a very little boy, he met a child still younger than himself, with whom he formed a close friendship that has lasted ever since, and has left strong traces on his intellectual development. This friend was the charming lyrical poet Jo'rgen Moe, now Bishop of Christianssand. Thus, a couple of these stories have been found among descendants of English immigrants in America; a couple of others I tell as I heard them myself in my youth in Australia. One of the best was taken down from the mouth of an English Gipsy. I have also included some stories that have only been found in Lowland Scotch. I have felt justified in doing this, as of the twenty-one folk tales contained in Chambers' Popular Rhymes of Scot land, no less than sixteen are also to be found in an English form. Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance.
