This book is about Jaime H. Fuentes, born in the city of Santiago, Chile, a South American country along the Pacific Ocean. It details the everyday occurrences as a child living without the luxuries of having a TV, a telephone, nor the family owning a car, so for fun and entertainment, comic books were rented from a local kiosk, and for transportation, either a taxicab or the local bus was used to go shopping and to visit friends and relatives. But there was never a dull moment as congregating with the kids in the neighborhood playing hide-and-seek and riding go-karts was a lot of fun and their father took them to the stadium almost every weekend to watch their professional soccer team Colo-Colo play. Once their grandmother made the transition of moving to the United States, their hopes were elevated as they also dreamed of moving to America, but it would take years after their mom followed their grandmother to America for Jaime, his brother, and his sister to finally make it to the United States. Once in America, he experienced the differences in the schools, the multiple cultures, and being able to afford a color TV set, a telephone, and a car and at the same time adapting to the cold weather including seeing snow coming down for the first time and the struggles in learning the English language and discovering the challenges of dating that includes the drama and the pain and suffering when it does not work out. And finally, this book takes the reader from childhood to adulthood of the author.

If you're struggling to achieve your goals this book can help you succeed. Ridiculed by his parents during his childhood, Nahuel Millaman, a seventeen-year-old Mapuche (indigenous Chilean citizen) boy living in Santiago, Chile is extremely shy and lacks self-confidence. When his girlfriend, Calfuray Cayancura, informs him that she is pregnant, the prospect of parenting a child is too daunting and he runs away hoping to regain his self-confidence and return before the child is born. Nahuel travels to the Valdivian Forests in south-central Chile to seek help from an old Mapuche Machi or Sharman, Sayen Melilan. The wise old woman explains what Nahuel needs to do to restore his self-confidence and devises a formula that he needs to follow to achieve success in his life. Nahuel returns to Santiago. By using the formula Nahuel finds employment and steadily becomes more and more successful. He returns to Calfuray but she tells him that she miscarried and is now living with another man. Nahuel and Calfuray move on, each engrossed in their own separate lives but still in love with each other. The man living with Calfuray turns out to be a woman beater and Calfuray deserts him and moves to the port city of Valparaiso. Nahuel neglects Machi Sayen's formula and not only loses his job but fails in his own business enterprise. Realizing his mistake he applies the formula once again and success follows. He moves to Valparaiso where there are better opportunities. To both Calfuray and Nahuel the possibility of being united seems impossible but the future can contradict expectations and Fate is never far away. What though, is the formula for success that Machi Sayen gave to Nahuel that led to his success?

Santiago S Children written by Steve Reifenberg and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-29 with Social Science categories.

Runner-up, Bronze Medal, Independent Publishers Book Awards: Memoir/Autobiography Category, 2009 Unclear about his future career path, Steve Reifenberg found himself in the early 1980s working at a small orphanage in a poor neighborhood in Santiago, Chile, where a determined single woman was trying to create a stable home for a dozen or so children who had been abandoned or abused. With little more than good intentions and very limited Spanish, the 23-year-old Reifenberg plunged into the life of the Hogar Domingo Savio, becoming a foster father to kids who stretched his capacities for compassion and understanding in ways he never could have imagined back in the United States. In this beautifully written memoir, Reifenberg recalls his two years at the Hogar Domingo Savio. His vivid descriptions create indelible portraits of a dozen remarkable kids—mature-beyond-her-years Verónica; sullen, unresponsive Marcelo; and irrepressible toddler Andrés, among them. As Reifenberg learns more about the children's circumstances, he begins to see the bigger picture of life in Chile at a crucial moment in its history. The early 1980s were a time of economic crisis and political uprising against the brutal military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Reifenberg skillfully interweaves the story of the orphanage with the broader national and international forces that dramatically impact the lives of the kids. By the end of Santiago's Children, Reifenberg has told an engrossing story not only of his own coming-of-age, but also of the courage and resilience of the poorest and most vulnerable residents of Latin America.

Chineseness In Chile written by Maria Montt Strabucchi and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-15 with Political Science categories.

This book explores the role of Chineseness or lo chino in the production of Chilean national identity. It does so by discussing the many voices, images, and intentions of diverse actors who contribute to stereotyping or problematizing Chineseness in Chile. The authors argue that in general, representing and perceiving China or Chineseness as the Other is part of a broader cultural and political strategy for various stakeholders to articulate Chile as either a Western country or one that is becoming-Western. The authors trace the evolution of the symbolic role that China and Chineseness play in defining racial, gendered, and class aspects of Chilean national social imaginary. In doing so, they challenge a common idea that Chineseness is a stable signifier and the simplistic perception of the ethnic Chinese as the unassimilable foreigner within the nation. In response, the authors call for a postmigrant approach to understanding identities and Chilean society beyond stubborn Orient-Occident and us-them dichotomies.

Chile And The United States written by William F. Sater and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

From virtually the onset of its independence in the early nineteenth century, Chile took a superior attitude toward its racially mixed and less organized neighbors. This stance was not unlike that of another young republic in the hemisphere: the United States. With their relatively stable governments and prosperous economies, the two countries claimed amoral right to impose their will on nearby nations. Given this shared imperial impulse, it is not surprising that they became rivals. In Chile and the United States, the third volume to appear in the series The United States and the Americas, William F. Sater traces the often stormy course of U.S.-Chilean relations, covering not only policy decisions but also the overall political, cultural, and economic developments that formed the context in which those policies unfolded. As Sater explains, the Chileans initially believed that they could triumph in the event of a clash with the Americans because of their superior moral commitment and willingness to endure sacrifice. Unintimidated by the size of the United States, Chile found its sense of mission bolstered by the American government's inconsistent enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine and grudging acceptance of Chilean dominance over Peru and Bolivia. Yet, Sater shows, by the end of the nineteenth century Chile had to face reality: its organizational skills could no longer compensate for a limited population and resource base. Worse, just as both the United States and Chile's neighbor Argentina became wealthier and more populous, Chile sank into a political morass that paralyzed its ability to govern itself. Once the premier power of the Pacific, it fell to second-rate status--a fact that nevertheless did little to mitigate the Chileans' sense of cultural superiority. In the early twentieth century, Sater notes, Chile scored several economic and diplomatic victories over the United States and, after World War II, resorted to various new doctrines and strategies in hopes of regaining its lost glory. When the efforts of strongmen failed, Chileans turned to Christian Democracy, Socialism, and finally military rule--none of which succeeded in restoring the country's political unity and self-esteem. Yet, Sater contends, rather than accept that geopolitical and economic realities had limited their nation's place in the world, Chileans blamed the United States for whatever ills befell them, even as they continued to expect American aid. For its part, the United States insisted that Chile accept its counsel in order to receive U.S. economic assistance. This frustrating standoff, Sater shows, is but the latest phase of a contentious relationship, nearly two centuries in the making, that shows no ready signs of disappearing.
