This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ...It would have been a clear case of "dog eat dog," and we would have agreed to act in an impartial manner and not aid either side if they had consulted us in regard to it. For about an hour there were no new developments, except that the Indians, by one means or another, tried to decoy some of us away from the bridge. One Indian on horseback moved along a little beyond the edge of the bluff, leading the gray horse which Lieutenant Collins had ridden. The gray acted very unwilling to be led, and pulled back. Two of the Indians rode up to him and commenced whipping him, but the animal only curvetted about and did not get ahead very fast. Some of the boys took a few shots at the Indian, but the instant the flash from a gun was seen, the Indian would lean over on the opposite side of his pony, and all one could see would be his hand grasping the animal's mane, and his foot over its back. The instant the shot had passed, the Indian would straighten up again. The shots struck a pony or two, but we had no ammunition to spare for that sort of business, and orders were given to cease firing, save in case of an attack. As soon as the Indians saw they could not draw us out in that manner, they commenced to call us all the vile names they could think of, using language they had picked up among the whites previous to the breaking out of the war, or had learned from the renegrade whites among them. Just at this time, one of the boys sang out: "There comes the train!" And sure enough, there it was in sight, coming over the hills about four miles from the station. The Indians had perceived it about the same time, and in a minute every one of them was on his pony and urging his animal at its fastest pace in that direction. There was a...

Excerpt from The Bozeman Trail, Vol. 2: Historical Accounts of the Blazing of the Overland Routes Into the Northwest, and the Fights With Red Cloud's Warriors If ever a roll Of honor is made Of the unnumbered heroes Of the great American Western Frontier who performed deeds Of valor without thought of recom pense or reward, but whose sole thought was duty, prompted by the necessity for instant action, that the lives Of others might be saved, the name Of John (por tugee) Phillips should be written high on the scroll Of fame. For lofty self-devotion and sacrifice it stands unparalleled, and for bravery and physical endurance has seldom, if ever, been equaled. And this is the story of Portugee Phillips' courageous deed: The Fetterman disaster Of December 21, 1866, had dropped like a thunderbolt on the little garrison at Fort Phil Kearney. Eighty-one men from the hated fort on the Little Piney had fallen victims to Red Cloud's strategic cunning in less than a brief half-hour Of combat. Glutted and drunken with their bloody victory over F etterman's command, the triumphant Sioux now felt that it would be a matter Of hours only before the balance of the already-depleted force behind the log Stockade would be in their power. And doubt less nothing but the awful, yet providential, severity Of the weather prevented this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. GOLD! The age-old motivator and one that saw tens of thousands of Americans fueling westward expansion to the Pacific coast. In 1863, John Bozeman pioneered a route that connected Montana gold fields to the Oregon Trail. As the Civil War closed, the flow of emigrants turned into a flood, angering the Native Americans over this intrusion into their nomadic lands. The Lakota chief Red Cloud declared war. Here are the stories of the years when the dangerous Bozeman Trail was in use. From it's first wagon train to the closing of the forts that protected the route, some of the most storied pioneers of the west played a part. The legendary Jim Bridger and the Fetterman Fight are just part of the adventure. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the migration that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
