The Breach of Eden is the retelling of the early chapters of Genesis through a very different lens. The central character of the book is Timron, a young, courageous shepherd and son of Jabal who dwelt with his father on the Plains of Nod beneath the shadows of the cursed mountain, Arel. One day, as Jabel and Timron were caring for their sheep, they heard a hideous sound descending from the Plateau of Elda, which girdled Arel, down to the plain below. Fearful of what this may portend for the rest of his family, Jabal asked Timron if he would carefully ascend the heights and investigate. Timron agreed, and that which he discovered proved to be the pivotal event in the history of the First Age of Arda. As he stepped out onto the Plateau of Elda, he was confronted, not by evil spirits, but by tens of thousands of people much like himself. The terrifying sound Timron and his father had heard was a lament, and when Timron inquires of a beautiful young woman as to to cause of the lament, he is informed that FirstFather Adam had just announced to his children that he was beginning his final year of life.Timron's reality fell apart. For centuries, he and the other descendents of Cain living below had been taught that FirstFather and FirstMother had died in sorrow after Cain had slew his brother for stealing his birthright. Alea then makes a decision which alters the history of Arda for all time: She takes the hand of the young shepherd and leads him into the presence of Adam and Eve. That which follows alters the course of history on both the Plateau and the Plain forever.

Commentary On Midrash Rabba In The Sixteenth Century written by Benjamin Williams and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-08 with Religion categories.

Printed editions of midrashim, rabbinic expositions of the Bible, flooded the market for Hebrew books in the sixteenth century. First published by Iberian immigrants to the Ottoman Empire, they were later reprinted in large numbers at the famous Hebrew presses of Venice. This study seeks to shed light on who read these new books and how they did so by turning to the many commentaries on midrash written during the sixteenth century. These innovative works reveal how their authors studied rabbinic Bible interpretation and how they anticipated their readers would do so. Benjamin WIlliams focuses particularly on the work of Abraham ben Asher of Safed, the Or ha-Sekhel (Venice, 1567), an elucidation of midrash Genesis Rabba which contains both the author's own interpretations and also the commentary he mistakenly attributed to the most celebrated medieval commentator Rashi. Williams examines what is known of Abraham ben Asher's life, his place among the Jewish scholars of Safed, and the publication of his book in Venice. By analysing selected passages of his commentary, this study assesses how he shed light on rabbinic interpretation of Genesis and guided readers to correct interpretations of the words of the sages. A consideration of why Abraham ben Asher published a commentary attributed to Rashi shows that he sought to lend authority to his programme of studying midrash by including interpretations ascribed to the most famous commentator alongside his own. By analysing the production and reception of the Or ha-Sekhel, therefore, this work illuminates the popularity of midrash in the early modern period and the origins of a practice which is now well-established-the study of rabbinic Bible interpretation with the guidance of commentaries.

The Avoidable War written by J. Kenneth Brody and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01-01 with Political Science categories.

The Avoidable War details how World War II, its destruction, and its consequences could have been avoided. This original interpretation of history provides insights into ways of preserving peace that can guide contemporary diplomacy. Volume 1 of The Avoidable War chronicles three converging streams that brought Europe to crisis in the summer of 1935: the growing military might of Nazi Germany; Mussolini's ambition to build a new Roman Empire in East Africa; and a massive mobilization of British public opinion in favor of peace, disarmament, and collective security through the League of Nations. Volume 2 brings the story to a close, detailing the tragic denouement of this crisis. While Hitler prepared to absorb Austria and remilitarize the strategically critical Rhineland, Pierre Laval, French foreign minister and later premier, labored to convert Italy into France's partner, with Britain, in containing Germany. When Italian aggression in Abyssinia led to League of Nations sanctions championed by Britain, the issue became: Abyssinia or Austria, Africa or Europe? Brody argues that the celebrated Hoare-Laval pact was a wise and practical arrangement to resolve the Abyssinian war which, while it rewarded aggression, preserved Italy as an ally in the vital task of containing Germany. Hoare-Laval was, of course, rejected by the massive moral indignation of the British public. When German troops entered the Rhineland in March 1936 and Britain declined to respond to desperate French pleas, the balance of political and military power had decisively shifted, establishing the fundamental conditions for the debacle of 1940. This unhappy tale invites the reader to reflect upon the conflict between a foreign policy based upon moral values as exemplified by Lord Cecil and a policy based upon interests and political realities, the guidelines of Pierre Laval. These considerations remain basic issues of foreign policy at the turn of the century.
