This book argues against the American capitalist society and makes a case for socialism. The author argues that much of the tragedy we face -- poverty, disease, pollution, war -- are the result of the drive for personal and corporate profit. He presents the pros and cons of socialism and how it could be achieved in the United States.

In Part I, this booklet traces the post-Independence struggles in the United States for the realization of the ideals of the early Enlightenment thinkers, with particular emphasis on the practical struggles of the working class. The mid nineteenth to the mid twentieth centuries origin and fates of the theories of Charles Darwin and Karl Marx in this country, are seen through the ideological lenses of the various classes, groups, and individual. We get glimpses of the pracgtical objectives of the culturally influential religious revivals, social Darwinist movement, and the current "dunbing down" of the US population - al of which had (and have ) the support and/or blessings of the corporate and political elite, down through the decades. In Part II, the author presents a reappraisal, mainly by academic Marxists in the advanced capitalist ststes,of the demise of soviet socialism, and their alternatives for a non- market socialism with transparency - Democratic Participatory Socialism. It is the hope of this writer that the ideas within will seed more discussion on socialsit theory and practice.

Early in the 20th century, revolutionary socialism was not only gaining momentum but appeared destined to conquer the world. By mid-century, the red flag flew over capitals in Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central America; by the 1970s over one-third of the world's population lived under socialist regimes. All that has changed. With the 20th century drawing to a close, the political map of the globe looks very different: most socialist states have collapsed, revolutionary movements have been abandoned, and the United States stands as the world's lone superpower. This unique volume examines these changes—the defeat of Marxism—and suggests that the present historical juncture is but a temporary setback in the march of the working class. The authors propose that Marxism remains the most useful approach in understanding and explaining contemporary capitalism and its decay, as well as the only path toward the liberation of society from class exploitation.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. Two years later the Soviet Union disintegrated. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union discredited the idea of socialism for generations to come. It was seen as representing the final and irreversible victory of capitalism. This triumphal dominance was barely challenged until the 2008 financial crisis threw the Western world into a state of turmoil. Through analysis of post-socialist Russia and Central and Eastern Europe, as well as of the United Kingdom, China and the United States, Socialism, Capitalism and Alternatives confronts the difficulty we face in articulating alternatives to capitalism, socialism and threatening populist regimes. Beginning with accounts of the impact of capitalism on countries left behind by the planned economies, the volume moves on to consider how China has become a beacon of dynamic economic growth, aggressively expanding its global influence. The final section of the volume poses alternatives to the ideological dominance of neoliberalism in the West. Since the 2008 financial crisis, demands for social change have erupted across the world. Exposing the failure of neoliberalism in the United Kingdom and examining recent social movements in Europe and the United States, the closing chapters identify how elements of past ideas are re-emerging, among them Keynesianism and radical socialism. As those chapters indicate, these ideas might well have potential to mobilise support and challenge the dominance of neoliberalism.
