Folgen solche Agglomerationen politischen Impulsen, dann kann man in Anlehnung an den Historiker Georges Lefebvre (1874–1959) bereits von einer Art "Versammlung" ( rassemblement) sprechen, die wenigstens basale Formen der Verfasstheit aufzuweisen pflegt. Wie in Jenseits der Ordnung? anhand von Beispielen aus dem gesamten europäischen Raum erörtert wird, war dies in der Frühen Neuzeit kaum anders. Auf der einen Seite erfüllte die Menge zu dieser Zeit eine konstitutionelle Funktion, indem sie im Rahmen ritueller und zeremonieller Formen dazu beitrug, die normativen Grundlagen der Vergemeinschaftung immer wieder zur Anschauung zu bringen und damit auch performativ zu befestigen. Dem entsprach eine politische Epistemologie, die sich lange auf die Evidenz organologischer Körperbilder und Metaphern stützte. Auf der anderen Seite war die Frühe Neuzeit auch eine Epoche, die von zahllosen kollektiven Protesten geprägt war, durch die Konflikte und soziale Spannungen prozessiert wurden. Orientiert an den Kategorien Gewalt, Verkörperungen und Steuerung bewegen sich die Beiträge des Bands in dem damit umrissenen Spannungsfeld. Konzeptuell schließt er einerseits an Debatten an, die sich in den letzten Jahren um die Relevanz von Schwärmen, Meuten oder Multitudes herum entfaltet haben. Andererseits geht es ihm darum, diese Debatten teils zu historisieren, teils mit historischer Tiefenschärfe auszustatten.
