Excerpt from The British Critic, Vol. 35: For January, February, March, April, May, June, 1810 In {peaking of Charges and Difcourfes fiparately publilhed, our attention is forcibly called to that charge of the learned bif/jop of Glouccyler, Dr. Hun. Tingford*, vwhich completes his infiruetions to the Clergy, on the fubjeft of Ordination. In our goth Volume, we fpoke ofa Charge, which was entitled Preparations for the Holy Order of 'deacons; the prefent is a limilar 'book of infiru''tion for thofe who are about to receive the holy 'order of Priefts. Borh are truly worthy of the learning, piety, and abi lities of the Bitp, 'and ought to be fiudie'd with atten tion by every candidate. The Bifbop of Carli/le': Fey? Sermon 1' is full of excellent advice, highly adapted to the necefiities of the time. Walker': Sermon, after the funeral of Bifhop Strachan contains much more than foch a difcourfe can ufually comprehend the hillorical View of an Apoftolical Church, with an elucidation of the principles and conduct of its rulers. On the celebration of the royal Jubilee, we have perufed feveral very good difcourfes; but among them we ought undoubtedly to diflinguilh that of the Principal of Marifchall College, Aberdeen, Dr. Brown When we meet fo old a friend, we are happy to find him unchanged in principles and powers. Jlrlr. Archdeacon Daubeny'r Sermon at St. Paul's n, fug geit's fonie very important cautions on the fubjefi of general education; and the apprehenfions which he expreites on the incroachments of latitudinarian fyftems, are fuch as no man can treat with levity, who is not himfclf infected with religious indifference. Other Difcourfes have been noticed, which might be mentioned here; but we 'mufi: always fet bounds to an enumeration which, though pleafing to ourfelves, might to our readers appear tedious. Excerpt from The British Critic, Vol. 5: A New Review, for January, February, March, April, May, and June We return, as usual, at our stated period, to select the flowers of British Literature, and recapitulate those productions which we have had the satisfaction to commend. As this is the most pleasing part of our talk, it is satisfactory to us to be informed, that our Readers also look with pleasure to it; and expect the closing of a volume, as the settling of a complicated account, by which they are assisted in the calculation of their gains. If there were a library endowed sufficiently to collect all valuable productions that appear, to such a record it would naturally apply; and the reports of a court of criticism, though not pretending to infallibility, would undoubtedly be consulted, if not with more use, at lead with more pleasure, than the reports of a court of law. We are happy therefore to provide, either for the general Collector, or the more confined selector of literature, an assistance of this nature; and for the mere speculator on the mental progress of his country, so pleasing and so interesting an object of contemplation. Excerpt from The British Critic, Vol. 37: For January, February, March, April, May, June, 1811 If then a fervice of this nature be efiential to the public if it be defirable that a. Complete hif'tory of the publications of any period lhould be at all attain able', we fay, without fear of contradiction, that thefe objeé'ts cannot be efi'eéted by any one or even all of thol'e publications which notice only eight or ten books in a quarter of a year. The average num ber of works mentioned, more or lei's explicitly, in each monthly publication of the Bat'rrsn Cnrrrc, is about thirty-five, which gives, in the whole year, the number of four hundred and twenty; and even this amount is ufually, as we. Have candidly Rated, deficient. What progrefs then can critics make who notice only forty, at the molt, in the fame period, and leveral of thofe perhaps not c'onneéled with Britilh literature? We delire not to contend about a name, or we might contend, that, in a arew, books ought to be te viewed, whereas, in the publications here alluded to, the title of a book (or even of leveral together) ferves frequently as a mere introduction to an origi nal difl'ertation, of great extent, in which the contents, the merits, or demerits of the introducing work are not even mentioned or alluded to. This then is evi dently not a critique but a new pamphlet on the fame (object, and requiring to be reviewed as much as that or thol'e which gave oecalion to it. But waving this, as bearing chiefly Upon the name of Review, we haf ten to conclude this introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
