To the Present Time I cannot refrain from attaching in a note a most splendid pas sage from Mr. Erskine's Speech upon Paine's Age of Reason, ' though perhaps familiar to many of my readers - But it seems. This is an Age of Reason, and the time and the person are at last arrived, that are to dissipate the errors, which have over spread the past generations of ignorance. The believers in Christianity are many; but it belongs to the few, that are wise, to correct their coedulity. Belief is an act of reason; and superior reason may, therefore, dictate to the weak. In running the mind along the list of sincere and devout Christians, I cannot help lamenting that newton had not lived to this day, to have had his shallowness filled up with this new flood 'of light. Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives, Vol. 4 of 6: Translated From the Original Greek He was lame of' one leg; but that defect, during his youth, was covered by the agreeable turn of the rest of his person; and the easy and cheerful manner in which he bore it, and his being the first to rally himself upon it, always made it the less regarded. Nay, that defect made his spirit of enterprlse more remarkable; for he never declined, on that account, any undertaking, however difficult or laborious. We have no portrait or statue of him. He would not suffer any to be made While he lived, and at his death he utterly forbade it. We are only told, that he Was a little man, and that he had not a commanding aspect. But a perpetual vivac cheerfulness, attended with a talent for raillery, which was expressed without any severity either of voice or look, made him more agreeable, even in age, than the young and the handsome.
