This is the story of a dancer Noorbai at the Moghul Court, who with her matchless beauty and artistic accomplishments, had captivated the hearts of the Moghul Emperor Muhammad Shah and the infamous invader Nadir Shah who had taken a fancy to take her along on his way back to Iran. However, Noorbai made up her mind not to leave her country. The realistic picture of the agony of the country in the grip of disruption and unrest, serves as a backdrop to the romantic love between Noorbai and Mohan—a Jat guard and a commoner, the latter making the secret and dramatic escape, from the Red Fort, of the former possible. Mohan, the Jat hero of the novel is a remarkable common man who leads Noorbai to elevate and sublimate her life at Vrindavan by singing devotional songs addressed to Lord Krishna. Noorbai with her transformed spirit finally symbolises the magic touch of the liberal Hindu philosophy of adjustment and assimilation, without whose operation the broken thorns of divisiveness sticking deep into our body politic, even now in the present turbulent times, cannot be dislodged or dissolved easily to make us a united nation i.e. India of our vision. Her self-abnegation in throwing gold and jewellery into the river Yamuna re-establishes that spiritual values are supreme in life.

Across a range of jurisdictions, in differing legal systems, mediation is achieving evergreater institutional and statutory force, and what not long ago was a marginal technique for dispute resolution is becoming mainstream and orthodox. But how firm a sense do we have about the social formation we call ‘mediation’? Through reflections and case histories, this distinctive collection of essays by experienced mediators from across the globe provides a clearer understanding than we have had heretofore of what mediation is and what it can offer as a practical, accessible and positive alternative in civil justice systems. The authors each address ways mediation has been or can be applied to dispute resolution in such pressing contexts as the following: • enduring and intense conflicts; • planning and environmental issues; • conflicts arising between refugee and ‘host’ communities; • elder care; • intercultural settings; • online communication; • science-based disputes; and • public policy disputes. The questions raised as to access to justice, identifying unmet needs, improving the provision of services, and fostering an ongoing conversation on mediation go well beyond the confines of commercial dispute resolution and the walls of courtrooms. Through the practical experiences described, useful and insightful perspectives emerge on the practice, principles and legitimacy of mediation. These invaluable reports and reflections on the powerful resources that mediation and mediators can bring to the table will be welcomed by a diversity of legal practitioners and jurists as well as academics.

The science of resilience engineering is so new that there is little agreement about what it is. This book presents a framework for implementation that any organization, public or private, can use as a guide for establishing its own procedures and processes for achieving system resilience. This framework relies on an extensive familiarity with both the current research and also standard ways that programs are run in industry. This book can be used as a textbook in university courses or as a reference for practicing engineers, technology managers, and business professionals.

Despite being a member of the highest caste, he is not endowed with riches because he gave them all out to people in need. This play is atypically romantic, funny, and thrilling for theatre art in India and is definitely worth reading.

This book examines economic reform in the Punjab in the period 1900-47 in an attempt to historicise theories of institutional change and community development. It advances the economic history of the region by analysing microeconomic reform in the province. A close examination of programmes of rural reconstruction in colonial Punjab reveals stark parallels with more contemporary prescriptions of development economics. Simultaneously, a study of the trajectory of legislative change sheds light on the institutional legacies of colonial rule. It engages deeply with the theoretical scholarship on development and rural uplift that emerges in this period and develops an intellectual genealogy that links colonialism to development studies. It questions the continued valorisation of the 'community' despite a lack of supportive evidence and argues that one reason for the continued popularity of ideas of community development and institutional malaise is that both absolve the status quo from blame.

Where Shall We Go This Summer is an intense story of a sensitive young wife torn between the desire to abandon the boredom and hypocrisy of her middle class and ostensibly comfortable existence, and the realisation that the bonds that bind her to it cannot easily be broken. 'Skilful dramatisation... the narrative is precariously perched between myth and social reality... for the talent itself, as the novel evidences, is exceptional in its innate sensibility and awareness of the craft of fiction.' — Times of India

Southern India, early eighteenth century. A mighty king is murdered, his royal army diminished. The queen seeks revenge with her army of women. As the warmongering nawabs annex the major dominions of Arcot, a small, rebellious kingdom, Sivaganga, is thrown into turmoil after the murder of its king, Muthuvaduganatha Thevar. His queen consort, Rani Velu Nachiyar, along with her generals and subjects, must immediately escape the palace to safety. Despite the many dangers of living in the wilderness, among them spies and assassins sent from Arcot to hunt her down, Velu Nachiyar soon emerges from the shadows to put up a fierce fight. With the Sivaganga army dwindled, she enlists women, training them in guerrilla warfare and the ancient martial arts techniques of the land. But with Arcot and the English joining forces, she is forced to traverse hostile enemy territories to reach Mysuru and seek the nawab Hyder Ali’s help. As the queen’s thirst for vengeance grows stronger and her enemies gain more ground, a confrontation on the battlefield is now inevitable. Will the fearless warrior queen avenge her husband’s murder and reclaim her throne? Will Rani Velu Nachiyar triumph in the first war of independence?
