Excerpt from The Building of a Cathedral This little book is sent forth in response to the ever-growing demand for more definite and detailed information concerning the Cathedral of ss. Peter and Paul in Washington. It has been a labour of love to write it; not only in grateful remembrance of those Cathedral workers in Washington, who have gone before us, but because the ideal of a cathedral, like its majestic watch tower, soars so high toward God and His Heaven above the crowded streets of the city and the noisy din of earthly life. And this ideal has been inspired by Christ Himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This little book is offered to the tourist in the most modest spirit and with the hope that in this convenient form some gleanings from the works of specialists may afford help and pleasure to those who run quickly through the Cathedral towns of England. The subject has been done so often and so well that an additional book would demand an apology if it pretended to compete with the labors of those who have spent long years in the study of special cathedrals, or with the charming recollections of travel that others have given the world from time to time.

The subject has been done so often and so well that an additional book would demand an apology if it pretended to compete with the labours of those who have spent long years in the study of special cathedrals, or with the charming recollections of travel that others have given the world from time to time. My plan has been merely to present in a single volume concise descriptions of the great ecclesiastical buildings of England, together with the story of their construction and historical associations supplemented with criticisms from the best authorities of their most striking architectural and artistic features. These authorities are duly acknowledged by initials. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Building of the Church The sovereign interest which this lectureship holds in its eye - the work of Preaching - has not been overlooked in the choosing of my subject. I do not forget that I am speaking to men who are interested supremely in the art of preaching, but I invite you to approach the subject through the Christian church. After so many illustrious teachers have spoken on the subject, it would be indeed presumptuous for any man at this late date to attempt to offer additional suggestion or instruction, were it not that the subject of preaching lies, like the New Jerusalem, foursquare, with an ideal number of gates on every side, through any one of which the lecturer may make his way into the heart of the imperial theme. Excerpt from The Architectural History of York Cathedral Tee following history is drawn up upon the same general system as that which I have already adopted in the cases of Canterbury and Winchester, which I have had the honour of publishing nu der the auspices of the Archaeological Institute. III the first place I have collected together the chronicled history of the building, retaining the very words of the original whenever the building itself was the immediate sub ject of the paragraph in question. I have, in the next place, closely examined the structure itself, analyzing its various arrangements as they arose from time to time, and comparing them with the previous chronicle. Much however of the history of this cathedral is necessarily derived from fabric rolls, indulgences, and other chapter documents which do not admit of being completely separated as the passages of a written chronicle do, and therefore I have been compelled to scatter these memoran da throughout my analysis of the structural changes. Nevertheless I have always taken the greatest pains to separate my own hypotheses and explanations of these documents from the documents themselves, in oppo sitiou to the general practice of writers of architectural history, which is, that after having satisfied themselves of the meaning and application of the chronicles and other documents to the various parts and periods of a building, they proceed to inter weave these documents into their histories in such a manner as to make it exceedingly diffit to discover other possible explanations. Excerpt from The Cathedral Builders in England The Transitional style, in which the birth of Gothic art stands revealed, came coincidentally with the foundations of a new monastic era -that of the reformed orders - and also with the growing influence Of the Bishops. Our English cathedrals give us good examples, for though most churches of the Regular Canons and of the Cistercians remain only in ruin, we have three cathedrals showing the essentially native sources of our English Gothic art. At Wells Bishop Reginald's church is a thoroughly English example; Canterbury quire, both by Gervase's contemporary account of its building and by its own Significant archi tecture, gives us the exact measure of the French importation and of the contemporary English style, as each was built under its successive master masons, William of Sens and William the Englishman. And Ripon cathedral, if less extensive, has its Special importance as a canon's church and example of the north-country style, which had such vigorous expression in the reformed building Of the lands north of Humber. Finally at Chichester, Winchester, Ely and Lincoln were works of full English Gothic, achieved before 1208 when the Pope's Interdict of England made a pause in religious building. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. I desire to express my grateful thanks to all who have kindly assisted in the preparation of this work, to the deans and canons-in-residence who have often guided me by their counsel during my study of their cathedrals, and also to the vergers who have readily afforded me much valuable help. More especially do I wish to thank the Deans of Lincoln, Ely, Chester and Gloucester, Canon Tristram of Durham, Bishop Anson of Lichfield, and Archdeacon Richardson of Southwell, for their courtesy and kindly interest. I have also to record my obligations to the work of many previous writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cathedral of Commerce: The Highest Building in the World Its location, too, is of supreme importance. It IS in the very heart of things - the civic center of the world's great metropolis, ln the midst of all transpor tation lines. It faces upon three streets and has nine entrances, including two, direct communications with the subway system. It is within a stone's throw of City Hall, the Municipal Building, Brooklyn Bridge, the Post Office and Courts, as well as close by the great financial and banking center. No building could command a better location or one more advantageous to its tenants. From the Observation Gallery, fifty-eight stories above the street, the View is marvelous, and the thrilling sensation which comes over the sight seer is never to be forgotten. It is indeed the most remarkable if not the most wonderful view in all the world. The scenic and color effects, with the sun shining on the multi-colored buildings around it, but far below, and on the water and land for twenty-five miles in every direction, make a landscape impossible of adequate description. The vast area spread out before the visitor's eye is inhabited by more than souls. To the north lies the great City, with the Hudson River and the lordl'y Highlands beyond. To the east are Long Island and the mighty Atlantic Ocean, with its ships passing to and fro far distant on the horizon where sky and water seem to meet. To the south are the great Harbor of New York, the Narrows through which pass all ships entering and leaving the Port of New York, Governor's Island, the Statue of Liberty, and Staten Island in the distance. To the west again is seen the Hudson River and the great expanses of meadow-land and mountainous country embracing Eastern New Jersey. Looking downward, the multitudes of people scurrying about the busy streets in close proximity to the Woolworth Building resemble an aggregation of pygmies - a crowd seen through the large end of a telescope. The View is bewildering. Every year upwards of visitors from all parts of the world comehere and the Register shows that these good people represent more than sixty different countries and thousands of cities.
