Few art collections in the world can rival that of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Built in 1885, the iconic museum holds more than a million works, with a particular focus on Dutch masters--its collection of works by Van Gogh, Vermeer, and Rembrandt are unparalleled. The museum recently reopened after a ten-year renovation that cost more than $400 million, and the result is stunning: never before has the Rijksmuseum's collection been displayed so well. This book offers a lavishly illustrated chronicle of both the collection and the building that houses it. Though nothing can replace an actual trip to the Rijksmuseum--as the more than two million annual visitors can attest--this book comes as close as possible, taking art lovers on a virtual tour of the greatest masterworks of Western art in a building that is brilliantly designed to show them at their best.

No building in the Netherlands has such a tempestuous relationship to Dutch identity as the Rijksmuseum. This book traces the history of the national Rijksmuseum project from its birth, midwifed by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers to the formulation of the restoration plan and the long road to the successful reopening in 2013. The Rijksmuseum has been viewed - and criticised - as a national symbol ever since it was built in 1885. Its neo-Gothic architecture was deemed too Catholic, the building too large and complex. And yet the 'Rijks' proved an effective mirror and signboard for the Dutch national self-image. In this book, a team of specialists exhaustively documents the design history of the building while taking into account the cultural, social and political environment.

The restoration of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of the biggest and most discussed renovations in Dutch history. This book shows the new Rijksmuseum, which will open to the public in April 2013, through the eyes of the architects: the Spanish duo Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz. Cruz and Ortiz have wide experience with alterations to old buildings and are internationally renowned for their sober yet recognizable, clear additions. For the Rijksmuseum they designed a plan centred on routing and orientation. The building, which had 'silted up' over the years, had to be made open and accessible again. Author Jaap Huisman introduces the reader to the design principles of Cruz y Ortiz. He follows their search for solutions for the many problems presented by the complex building - which was for many years the largest building in the Netherlands. The result is a purified museum that has rediscovered its dignity and is ready to display its world-famous collection to over 1 million curious visitors a year.

The Rijksmuseum is one of 16 formerly state owned museums in the Netherlands. Its collection is an overview of Dutch art and history. Among it are masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Since 1885 the museum is located in the Rijksmuseum building in Amsterdam, designed by Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers. The focus of this research was to examine the impact of the Rijksmuseum on the economy of Amsterdam. This was done by conducting an economic impact analysis. The I-O model was chosen for this research. The final demand was obtained through questionnaires. The Flegg's location quotient was used in order to regionalize the I-O table. With the help of the Leontief equation the direct and indirect impacts were calculated in terms of the number of jobs, output, value added and income. The calculations show that there is a positive impact on the regional economy of Amsterdam. The indirect impacts in the remaining sectors compared to the direct impacts in the sectors wholesale, retail trade and repair vehicles, transportation and storage, accommodation and food serving arts, entertainment and recreation comprise approximately 17,5% which can be seen as significant and as an indicator that the Rijksmseum has a positive impact on the regional economy."
