In her spirited memoir, A. E. Hayoun paints an eye-opening portrait of immigrating to Israel and building a new life in Israel’s beautiful, controversial, and sometimes hostile Negev desert. At once a vulnerable narrative of personal experience, The Camel in the Forest is also a remarkable, brief history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Camel in the Forest is A. E. Hayoun’s first-hand account of life in Israel that takes place a few years before and during Operation Guardian of the Walls; the 12-day war that came as the result of terrorist groups Hamas and the Islamic Jihad breaking the permanent ceasefire between Israel and Gaza in 2021. In a lyrical voice that weaves together authentic experience, historical narrative, and the colorful tapestry of Jewish expression, this courageous collection of true stories brings to life the Jewish homeland of rich history, complex politics, and intricate relationships between cultures that are an unavoidable part of everyday life in Israel and the Middle East. In the style of Yehuda Amichai and the spirit of Noa Tishby, The Camel in the Forest is inspired by ancient Judaic texts, the unique beauty of the Negev desert, and the reality of war that plagues Israeli society. The Camel in the Forest speaks in the voice of a new generation of Israelis and will forever change your understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

This is the story of a lazy camel who requested the forest god for a longer neck so that it wouldn't have to move its whole body. The forest god granted the request, but little did the camel know that it would soon turn into a curse. As time went by, the burden of the longer neck became too heavy for the camel to bear, ultimately leading to its demise. This story beautifully depicts the concept of means versus ends. When trying to achieve a goal, it can be tempting to take shortcuts or resort to inappropriate methods to get there quickly. However, it's important to remember that taking such measures can often lead to disaster. It's always better to approach our work with sincerity and honesty, rather than searching for quick and easy solutions that may ultimately cause more harm than good. By putting in the effort to do things the right way, we can achieve our goals in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Every child growing up in India knows the story of the jackal who fell into the vat of blue dye, and discovering the power of his majestic new appearance, declared himself king of the forest. In spite of his pretenses, the jackal, eventually betrayed by his own instincts, was set upon by the other animals. This and many similar narratives are found in the Pañcatantra, the collection of Sanskrit tales for children compiled by a Jaina monk named Pūrṇabhadra in 1199 CE. In this book, McComas Taylor looks at the discourses that give shape and structure to the fall of the indigo jackal and the other tales within the Pañcatantra. The work's fictional metasociety of animals, kings, and laundrymen are divided according to their jāti, or "kind." This discourse of caste holds that individuals' essential natures, statuses, and social circles are all determined by their birth. Taylor applies contemporary critical theory developed by Foucault, Bourdieu, Barthes, and others to show how these ideas are related to other Sanskritic master-texts, and describes the "regime of truth" that provides validation for the discourse of division.
