Excerpt from The Campaigns of the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861 1865 Most historians of the war recite the events chronologically, that is breaking from the campaigns of one section to describe those of another. We, however, have departed from this order, believing that a continuous account of each section will impress on the memories of the readers a clearer and more comprehensive conception of these intricate affairs. Excerpt from The Great Contest: A History of Military and Naval Operations During the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861-1865 The histories that have been given to the public are in two, three, four, or more volumes, and are expensive; and the military and naval operations narrated in them are so interlaced with civil and polit ical history that it becomes tedious to the reader to follow the thread of the story. Every family that is able Should have such a history as greeley, lossing, draper, DE paris, or badeau has written. They are certam valuable; and to those who possess either, it is believed that this work will prove an excellent auxiliary. To the majority of people, however, simply the facts connected with the military and naval movements are of special interest, or what was going on at the front; and for this class this book is more particularly written. Two years of hard labor and thorough search have been spent upon this work in the endeavor to make it as nearly correct as possible; yet errors will no doubt appear, perhaps many of them. Dates of battles are easily obtained, but it is not always easy to ascertain the exact number engaged upon each side, or the exact losses in battle. In this work, in most instances, approximate round numbers are given. The arrangement of this volume originated with a desire to enable the -reader to follow each army, or the operations in any one section. Excerpt from History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 This is not an abridgment of my three volumes on the Civil War but a fresh study of the subject in which I have used my work as one of many authorities. Whenever I have transferred sentences, paragraphs and pages, I have done so because, after a study of the original authorities, I found that I could give my conclusions no better than in my first work. Since writing the three volumes, published respectively in 1895, 1899 and 1904, much new original material has come to light and valuable treatments of certain periods of the Civil War have appeared. I owe especial indebtedness to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies; Diary of Gideon Welles; Life of Rawlins, which J. H. Wilson kindly permitted me to read in manuscript before publication; the Letters and Diaries of John Hay; Miss Nicolay's Personal Traits of Lincoln; Life and Letters of General Meade; W. R. Livermore, Story of the Civil War; J. Bigelow, Jr., The Campaign of Chancellorsville; W. R. Thayer, Life of John Hay; The Reminiscences of Carl Schurz. I owe a literary revision of this volume to my son, Daniel P. Rhodes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of the Civil War, Vol. 1: A Concise Account of the War in the United States of America, Between 1861 and 1865 The task attempted in the following work is in certain respects a novel one. It is to write of the subjects treated from the stand-point of each of the contending parties. In my judgment the war should not be so depicted as to imply that the North and the South differed and quarreled about the same things. That was not the fact. The questions presented to the men of the North were not the same as those with which their Southern contemporaries had to deal. This might be very fully illustrated by referring to the relation which the institution of slavery bore to the people of the North, as compared with its relation to the people of the South; but into this subject the scope of our narrative will not allow us to go. I will illustrate what I mean by calling attention to the fact that the State held a totally different place in the political thought of the South from what it occupied in that of the North. Excerpt from Slavery and Four Years of War, Vol. 1: A Political History of Slavery, in the United States; Together With a Narrative of the Campaigns, and Battles of the Civil War in Which the Author Took Part: 1861-1865 The writer of this book was a volunteer officer in the Union army throughout the war of the Great Rebellion, and his service was in the field. The book, having been written while the author was engaged in a somewhat active professional life, lacks that literary finish which results from much pruning and painstaking. He, how ever, offers no excuse for writing it, nor for its composition; he has presumed to nothing but the privilege of telling his own story in his own way. He has been at no time forgetful of the fact that he was a subordinate in a great conflict, and that other soldiers discharged their duties as faithfully as himself; and while no special favors are asked, he nevertheless hopes that what he has written may be accepted as the testimony of one who entertains a justifiable pride in having been connected with large armies and a participant in important campaigns and great battles. He flatters himself that his summary of the political history of slavery in the United States, and of the important political events occurring upon the firing on Fort Sumter, and the ac count he has given of the several attempts to negotiate a peace before the final overthrow of the Confederate armies, will be of special interest to students of American history. Slavery bred the doctrine of State-rights, which led, inevitably, to secession and rebellion. The story of slavery and its abolition in the United States is the most tragic one in the world's annals. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity.
