Excerpt from The Canadian Builder, Vol. 8: March, 1918 HE dwelling illustrated has many excellent T features which will appeal to Canadian builders. Among them are a verandah with concrete floor and brick balustrade; glass doors downstairs ex cept in the kitchen, those between hall and living room and between livingroom and diningroom being sliding doors, large stone fireplace pantry with cupboards, ironing board cupboard, etc. A number of interesting details may be gathered from the following description. The first paragraph of the specifications below deserves special attention: Contractors tendering on this work shall be re 'quired to visit the premises so as to become familiar with the natural fall of the ground. As it will be the duty of the contractor who is entrusted with the work to do all the grading and filling necessary to comply with the requirements of the drawings. Each contractor shall lay out his own work and be responsible for its correctness. He shall carefully protect all materials and finished work and shall do all cutting and fitting necessary for the other trades to properly carry out their work, Excavator to excavate for the whole of the basement as shown on plan. Also for footings of all walls, cross walls, piers. Etc. Specifications also provide for filling and sodding. Concrete footings were laid under all walls, composed of Portland cement, clean, sharp sand and freshly broken hard stone, small enough to pass through a in. Ring and thoroughly screened in the following pro portions: - 1 part cement. 2 parts sand, and 4 parts stone. Foundation walls are as shown, 16 in. And 12 in. Thick built of Credit Valley coursed ashler, laid in lime mortar. All foundation walls below grade are tarred with a thick coat of hot pitch. Walls and piers are of brick laid in mortar composed of one part lime to three parts sand. Corners are laid so that four rise not higher than 1134 ins. When laid up in the wall Brick' work is bonded every sixth course. Brick 14 in. Piers are built in the basement as shown, cement mortar being used consisting of one part cement and three parts sand.
