An examination of the linguistic and cultural construction of one of the texts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. In the twelfth century, a version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was rewritten at Peterborough Abbey, welding local history into an established framework of national events. This text has usually been regarded as an exception, a vernacular Chronicle written in a period dominated by Latin histories. This study, however, breaks new ground by considering the Peterborough Chronicle as much more than just an example of the accidental longevity of the Chronicle tradition. Close analysis reveals unique interpretations of events, and a very strong sense of communal identity, suggesting that the construction of this text was not a marginal activity, but one essential to the articulation of the abbey's image. This text also participates in a vibrant post-Conquest textual culture, in particular at Canterbury, including the writing of the bilingual F version of the Chronicle; its symbiotic relationship witha wider corpus of Latin historiography thus indicates the presence of shared sources. The incorporation of alternative generic types in the text also suggests the presence of formal hybridity, a further testament to a fluid and adaptable textual culture. Dr Malasree Home teaches at Newcastle University.

This volume brings together every catalogue and book-list to survive from the library of Peterborough Abbey, one of the great monastic houses of medieval England. The lists range in date from the tenth-century bequest of Bishop pthelwold of Winchester (the first such record to survive from England) to the select list of titles recorded by John Leland prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A catalogue of the early twelfth century records 61 titles, and may conceivably be a record of what had survived the flames of a disastrous fire in 1116. A long list of abbatial bequests to the library covers the years 1177-1391 and includes the important donation of Abbot Benedict (1177-1193). The chief catalogue to survive is the so-called Matricularium, a peculiar and complicated document of the late fourteenth century, attesting some 347 compendious volumes. Certainly, this number of books can only represent a portion of the collection at the time, but the catalogue remains enormously valuable since it records the many subsidiary titles in each volume instead of merely the first, and allows a small number of surviving manuscripts to be identified as having been at Peterborough. Also included in this volume are texts which relate to the practice of reading in the abbey: the cycle of refectory reading during the liturgical year, and the annual distribution in Lent of books for private reading.

The status of lord represented one of the most original solutions to the political and social transitions of the Medieval period. Questions still remain unanswered and require further investigation, thus many scholars have collaborated to produce this collection which offers a synthesis of the most recent scholarship. This book relates the workings of seigneurial systems in different areas of Europe, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, from Castile to Pontus. In this way, the perspective remains the same, institutional and material. This book emphasises both the institutional and informal forms of lordship identified and crystallised by social and political actors (for example, communities, sovereigns, nobles, bishops, and abbots). It offers a general framework for those approaching the subject for the first time and a useful in-depth tool with numerous regional cases for long-term scholars.

The operation of the land market is a topic of crucial importance to the student of economic and social history in the Middle Ages. In this book, Dr King uses a wide range of source material to examine the character of the land market on the estates of Peterborough Abbey in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. He suggests that some common pattern emerges in the behaviour of those concerned, and offers an original interpretation of certain familiar types of medieval record.

Following the normal practice in Benedictine monasteries, the obedientiaries of Westminster Abbey kept two quite different kinds of record, and for distinct purposes. Their charters, together with the cartularies and registers where these documents were so often copied, made it possible for them to defend the Abbey's properties and privileges when these were challenged by lay or ecclesiastical opponents. Their financial records - the subject-matter of this book - assisted good housekeeping within their several departments and enabled them to survive the audit which each faced once a year at the hands of fellow-monks; only the abbot and prior were tacitly exempted from this testing experience. The core of the collection of financial records consists of the so-called final accounts prepared each year by obedientiaries, other than the abbot and prior, for scrutiny at the audit. Nearly 2,000 of these survive, not counting second copies. In the course of the year, however, obedientiaries made use of many other forms of financial record. Without these subsidiary records, it would have been difficult or impossible to compile the final accounts, and we can be confident that many were on the table at the audit and owe their survival to this circumstance.
