Gillian Ford's book is unique - it contains ground-breaking research about Thomas Cartwright, Bishop of Chester. It demonstrates the vital role of genealogy in interpreting history. Through Gillian's meticulous search, Cartwright takes shape as a flesh and blood individual amid his family and friends. Rare insights into conflicted loyalties are revealed, and the age old dilemma of Church and State is highlighted. This book lays the necessary groundwork to accurately reinterpret Thomas Cartwright and shows that his support of King James II is comprehensible in the light of his extreme belief in the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings. Those interested in 16th and 17th century gentry genealogy will find many previously unknown connections. Unlocking Cartwright's Diary enabled the decoding of John's Manningham's as well, and this will interest Shakespearean scholars. Contains new information on Anne Vaughan Locke and her sister Jane Vaughan Wiseman. A rare gem for anyone interested in this period of history.
