Excerpt from The Cavalier in America The twin sponsors of American colonization were two cavaliers during the days of Queen Elizabeth - Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half-brother, Sir Walter Raleigh. They conceived the idea, that to destroy the superiority of Spain, England must plant a colony in the New World. Accordingly the former obtained a patent of colonization in 1678, and attempted to establish a settlement in the neighborhood of Newfoundland. The attempt proved futile, and in the effort the noble Gilbert was drowned in the waves of the angry ocean. His last words will ever be kept in precious remembrance: "We are as near heaven by sea as by land." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This swashbuckling romance follows the fortunes of Miss Charlotte Durand, a Confederate patriot. She falls in with and marries Captain Oliver only to learn, much to her surprise, that Captain Oliver is not the Confederate officer she believed him to be, but, rather, a Yankee spy.Book ExcerptOur camp was in the heart of Copiah County, Mississippi, a mile or so west of Gallatin and about six miles east of that once robber-haunted road, the Natchez Trace. Austin's brigade, we were, a detached body of mixed Louisiana and Mississippi cavalry, getting our breath again after two weeks' hard fighting of Grant. Grierson's raid had lately gone the entire length of the State, and we had had a hard, vain chase after him, also.

George Washington Cable (October 12, 1844 - January 31, 1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been called "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century", as well as "the first modern southern writer." In his treatment of racism, mixed-race families and miscegenation, his fiction has been thought to anticipate that of William Faulkner.

Due to hostility against him after two 1885 essays encouraging racial equality and opposing Jim Crow, Cable moved with his family to Northampton, Massachusetts. He lived there for the next thirty years, then moved to Florida.
