The first history of Korean photography in English. Photography and Korea is the first history of Korean photography for a Western readership. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, when Korean travelers brought photographic technology home from China, Photography and Korea presents multiple visions of the country, Korean diasporas, important Korean artists, and local photographers. The book also addresses studio and institutional practices during the Japanese colonial period, how photography connects with Korean political and cultural history, and the divergence of practices after the division of Korea. Featuring numerous striking images, this book is essential reading for all interested in the history of Korean photography.

Photography in Japan 1853-1912 is a fascinating visual record of Japanese culture during its metamorphosis from a feudal society to a modern, industrial nation at a time when the art of photography was still in its infancy. The 350 rare and antique photos in this book, most of them published here for the first time, chronicle the introduction of photography in Japan and early Japanese photography. The images are more than just a history of photography in Japan; they are vital in helping to understand the dramatic changes that occurred in Japan during the mid-nineteenth century. These rare Japanese photographs—whether sensational or everyday, intimate or panoramic—document a nation about to abandon its traditional ways and enter the modern era. Taken between 1853 and 1912 by the most important Japanese and foreign photographers working in Japan, this is the first book to document the history of early photography in Japan a comprehensive and systematic way.

"In recent years, a generation of photographers from South Korea who can justifiably be referred to as pioneers has caused quite a sensation on the global photo scene. Since the late 1980s, the visual arts in South Korea have quantitatively expanded against the background of rapid economic growth. The seventy-seven photographic artists selected in this project observe and interpret social and cultural changes in Korea from their own perspectives. Korea is expressed through intense portraits, beautiful sceneries, strategic cityscapes, records of daily life, and digitally reconstructed time and space. It is marked by a fascinating variety that has been captured in the volume 'Contemporary Korean photography': the meditative black-and-white nature studies by Bien-U BAE contrast strongly with the pseudo-American plastic world of Sungsoo KOO; the psychologizing, intense portraits by Soonchoel BYUN respond to Sanghyun LEE and his garish, ironizing quotes of Korean history"--Publisher.

Shooting For Change written by Jung Joon Lee and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-23 with Photography categories.

In Shooting for Change, Jung Joon Lee examines postwar Korean photography across multiple genres and practices, including vernacular, art, documentary, and archival photography. Tracing the history of Korean photography while considering what is disguised or lost by framing the history of photography through nationhood, Lee considers the role of photography in shaping memory of historical events, representing the ideal national family, and motivating social movements. Further, through an investigation of what it means to practice photography under the normalized conditions of militarism, Lee treats the transnational militarism of Korea as a lens through which to probe the officially and culturally sanctioned readings of images when returning to them at different times. Among other themes, Lee draws on photography of militarized sex work, political protest in the military era, war orphans, and mass protests. Ultimately, Lee treats the formative periods in nation building and transnational militarization as both backdrop and cultivator for photographic works.

From a legendary American photojournalist, iconic photographs from the Korean War to Picasso at his most intimate. David Douglas Duncan is one of the most revered American photographers of the twentieth century. Born in 1916, he was a witness to most of the century and captured many of its historic events and epic personalities through his lens. Beginning as a Marine Corps combat photographer in 1943, Duncan assembled a portfolio that features some of the most arresting photographs taken of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Duncan often plunged into the middle of the action to get the best shot, and his heroics with the camera won him a job with Life magazine. During his career, he traveled the world, shooting conflicts in Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. In 1956, he knocked on Pablo Picasso’s door and began a friendship that would make him the only person to photograph Picasso’s personal paintings and the artist in intimate scenarios—such as the bathtub. In My 20th Century, the now ninety-eight-year-old Duncan offers a curated selection of some of his very best photographs and a summary of his lifelong work. Designed by his own hands, the book includes riveting shots of a world torn by war, invigorated by art, and colored by diverse cultures. A true poet of the lens, adventurer, and teller of stories, Duncan belongs to the present as much as he does the past. His legacy lives on in this powerful visual tableau.
