The Dialectic Of Freedom written by Maxine Greene and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Education categories.

Special 2018 Edition From the new Introduction by Michelle Fine, Graduate Center, CUNY : "Why now, you may ask, should I return to a book written in 1988? Because, in Maxine's words: 'When freedom is the question, it is always time to begin.'" In The Dialectic of Freedom, Maxine Greene argues that freedom must be achieved through continuing resistance to the forces that limit, condition, determine, and—too frequently—oppress. Examining the interrelationship between freedom, possibility, and imagination in American education, Greene taps the fields of philosophy, history, educational theory, and literature in order to discuss the many struggles that have characterized Americans’ quests for freedom in the midst of what is conceived to be a free society. Accounts of the lives of women, immigrants, and minority groups highlight the ways in which Americans have gone in search of openings in their lived situations, learned to look at things as if they could be otherwise, and taken action on what they found. Greene presents a unique overview of American concepts and images of freedom from Jefferson’s time to the present. She examines the ways in which the disenfranchised have historically understood and acted on their freedom—or lack of it—in dealing with perceived and real obstacles to expression and empowerment. Strong emphasis is placed on the focal role of the arts and art experience in releasing human imagination and enabling the young to reach toward their vision of the possible. The author concludes with suggestions for approaches to teaching and learning that can provoke both educators and students to take initiatives, to transcend limits, and to pursue freedom—not in solitude, but in reciprocity with others, not in privacy, but in a public space.

Reclaiming Freedom In Education written by Max A. Hope and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-02 with Education categories.

Reclaiming Freedom in Education examines the notion of ‘freedom’ within educational settings. Following an investigation of the new ‘Free Schools’ in the UK, it argues that this name is a misnomer, and instead explores the original free schools of the 1960s and 1970s, using these models as a lens through which to explore contemporary examples of radical schooling, notably those which describe themselves as democratic and/or progressive. By arguing that in radical educational contexts both ‘positive freedom’ and ‘negative freedom’ are apparent, and that the notion that ‘responsible freedom’ is more pertinent than that of ‘absolute freedom’, this book posits that freedom can be seen to operate in a number of ways including ‘freedom to be’, ‘freedom to think’, ‘freedom to choose’ and ‘freedom to self-govern’. The book: Describes how freedom can be used to inform educational structures, policies, pedagogies and practices across a range of settings Features illustrative case studies of radical free schools and alternative education spaces which have been underpinned by a commitment to freedom and to advancing social justice Critiques the current policy agenda to use ‘freedom’ to make education more competitive through claims that it correlates with higher test scores and academic success Considers some of the challenges for teachers, educators and students of offering and experiencing freedom in education, and argues that despite these, the case for advancing freedom is both urgent and compelling Creating discussions about the new meaning and role that ‘freedom’ can have in improving education, Reclaiming Freedom in Education is a practical contribution to educational activism, which will be a key point of reference for teachers, parents, researchers and students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Education Studies, Early Childhood Studies and doctorates.

The five chapters of this book on teachers' need and responsibility to prepare themselves for criticisms and attacks on their teaching methods and materials deal with the scope of censorship issues, the significance of academic freedom, recent judicial rulings, school-community tensions, and case studies of censorship cases. The first chapter, "Child Abuse in the Hate Factory" (Edward Jenkinson), describes tactics used by critics of public education to create dissatisfaction among parents and to encourage people to challenge books, courses, and teaching methods. The paper lists 50 aspects of public education targted at one time or another by schoolbook protesters. Chapter 2, "The Significance of and Rationale for Academic Freedom" (Jack Nelson), discusses the professional and social significance of academic freedom, teacher competence necessary for academic freedom, some problems, and some needed improvements. The chapter called "Academic Freedom: What the Courts Have Said" (John Strope, Jr. and Cathy Broadwell), focuses upon cases where public school teachers went to court arguing for their right to academic freedom and other cases offering insights into teachers' rights. Chapter 4, "Academic Freedom and Community Involvement: Maintaining the Balance" (Arnold Fege), discusses social and demographic changes contributing to censorship tensions and argues that parents involved in their children's education should not impose their own values by narrowing the content of the educational program. The fifth and final chapter, "Lessons Learned from Three Schoolbook Protests" (Edward Jenkinson), outlines myths about schoolbook protests and describes three Indiana experiences. An appendix prepared by Janet Jones includes "The Typical Censorship Scenario,""Six Case Studies with Helpful Tips,""Countering Far Right Tactics,""Generic Materials Selection," and "Survival Tips." References accompany each paper. (JDD)

Academic Freedom written by Michael Ignatieff and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-15 with Education categories.

Academic freedom-the institutional autonomy of scientific, research and teaching institutions, and the freedom of individual scholars and researchers to pursue controversial research and publish controversial opinions-is a cornerstone of any free society. Today this freedom is under attack from the state in many parts of the world but it is also under question from within academe. Bitter disputes have erupted about whether liberal academic freedoms have degenerated into a form of coercive political correctness. Populist currents of political opinion are questioning the price a society pays for the freedom of its `experts' and professors. This volume summarizes the highlights of the discussions of international experts and political figures who examined the state of academic freedom world-wide at a gathering in the summer of 2017. Topics range widely, from the closing of universities in Turkey and the narrowing space for academic freedom in Hungary, China and Russia, to the controversies about free speech roiling American campuses. The book contains thoughtful historical analysis of the origins of the ideal of academic freedom; eloquent testimony from the front lines of the battle to defend the academy as a free space for controversial thought; as well as analysis of how university autonomy and self-government are endangered by hostile political forces around the world.
