We are a culture of surfers; whether we're changing channels, browsing web sites, or skimming glossy pages, we are constantly sampling the dreams and experiences of others, to try to make sense of--or distract us from--our own. As the bestseller lists indicate, we are also engaged in a search for our souls, attempting to reclaim that mysterious, sacred uniqueness that entitles us to the joy and freedom that we sense are missing from our lives. Soul Surfing combines these two popular notions into a powerful prescription for spiritual development: a ten-step program that tells readers how to achieve real-world benefits by connecting with their soul work with the same intensity and intimacy that they bring to the movies, music and media that dominate our culture. An intuitive counselor with a thriving private practice, Dawnea Adams goes beyond tales of her psychic prowess to offer techniques that readers can perform independently: a series of ten visualization-based spiritual steps, called "phases," that help readers accomplish the precise spiritual healing and growth they need to move ahead. As soul surfers, we are taught to scan our memories and dreams and lock in to the sources of our pain. In terms that the media-distracted masses can understand, each phase then guides us through the creation of a movie of the mind in which we visualize the healing we need; ranging from scenes recalled from our past to those imagined in our future, these visualizations help us replace toxic mental reruns with empowering visions of liberation and possibility. Each phase is accompanied by inspiring case histories from Adams' years of private practice, recommended video viewing, and revealing personal stories that illustrate the powerful role that phasing work has played in Adams' own spiritual journey. A uniquely accessible and practical addition to the current literature of the soul, from a down-to-earth, charismatic psychic determined to use her gifts to help others, Soul Surfing is a self-help book for the media-saturated millennium.

"What is most striking about Mr. Nixon's charge to seize the moment, nearly all of which is sensible and sound, is the continuity of his counsel." —The New York Times “In Moscow, Khrushchev arrogantly predicted to me, 'Your grandchildren will live under communism.' I responded, 'Your grandchildren will live in freedom.' At the time, I was sure he was wrong, but I was not sure I was right. As a result of the new Soviet revolution, I proved to be right. Khrushchev's grandchildren now live in freedom." In this brilliantly timed book, Richard Nixon defines the challenges and opportunities facing America as the world's sole superpower. Only American leadership, he contends, can guide the turbulent post-Soviet Union world toward freedom and prosperity and make the 21st century an American century. Forcefully dismissing the three prevailing post-Cold War myths about America—that "history has ended" with the defeat of communism, that military power had become irrelevant, and that America is a declining power—Nixon charts the course America must take in the future to seize this moment in history.

Throughout their time in office, American presidents are often forced to choose between leading the nation and leading their party. In an earlier time when the major parties were less polarized, this leadership dilemma, while challenging, was not nearly as vexing as it is today. American presidents now find themselves with little room to maneuver, compelled to serve the Constitution on the one hand and yet caught within bitter partisan disputes and large numbers of unaffiliated voters on the other. The contributors to this volume investigate how recent presidents have navigated these increasingly rocky political waters. Focusing on campaign strategy, presidential rhetoric, relations with Congress, domestic and foreign policy, The Presidential Leadership Dilemma presents a wide-ranging, detailed, and fascinating study of how contemporary presidents face the challenge at the heart of every presidency.

The Imperiled Presidency: Presidential Leadership in the 21st Century calls for a dramatic re-evaluation of the American president’s role within the separation of powers system. In contrast with claims by academics, pundits, media, and members of Congress, this provocative new book argues that the contemporary American presidency is too weak rather than too strong. Cal Mackenzie offers the contrarian argument that the real constitutional crisis in contemporary American politics is not the centralization and accumulation of power in the presidency, but rather that effective governance is imperiled by the diminished role of the presidency. The product of more than three years of research and writing and nearly four decades of the author’s teaching and writing about the American presidency, The Imperiled Presidency is the first book-length treatment of the weaknesses of the modern presidency, written to be accessible to undergraduates and interested citizens alike. It engages with a wide range of literature that relates to the presidency, including electoral politics, budgetary politics, administrative appointments, and the conduct of foreign affairs. It would be a useful complement to courses that rely primarily on a single textbook, as well as courses that are built around more specific readings from a range of books and articles.

The End Of Greatness written by Aaron David Miller and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-07 with Political Science categories.

The Presidency has always been an implausible—some might even say an impossible—job. Part of the problem is that the challenges of the presidency and the expectations Americans have for their presidents have skyrocketed, while the president's capacity and power to deliver on what ails the nations has diminished. Indeed, as citizens we continue to aspire and hope for greatness in our only nationally elected office. The problem of course is that the demand for great presidents has always exceeded the supply. As a result, Americans are adrift in a kind of Presidential Bermuda Triangle suspended between the great presidents we want and the ones we can no longer have. The End of Greatness explores the concept of greatness in the presidency and the ways in which it has become both essential and detrimental to America and the nation's politics. Miller argues that greatness in presidents is a much overrated virtue. Indeed, greatness is too rare to be relevant in our current politics, and driven as it is by nation-encumbering crisis, too dangerous to be desirable. Our preoccupation with greatness in the presidency consistently inflates our expectations, skews the debate over presidential performance, and drives presidents to misjudge their own times and capacity. And our focus on the individual misses the constraints of both the office and the times, distorting how Presidents actually lead. In wanting and expecting our leaders to be great, we have simply made it impossible for them to be good. The End of Greatness takes a journey through presidential history, helping us understand how greatness in the presidency was achieved, why it's gone, and how we can better come to appreciate the presidents we have, rather than being consumed with the ones we want.
