In contemporary societies, identities are believed to be more fluid, less easily definable, demanding new articulations and new dialogues. However, some communities seem unable to engage in a dialogue traversing cultural borders and fostering the appreciation of diversity as the cornerstone of a more just and humane world. Is intercultural exchange truly possible in societies riddled with tensions of every sort? Multicultural and intercultural interactions may have given us the opportunity to enrich our understanding of the other, but they have also posed new challenges for education practices and educational politics. This collection of studies addresses some of the challenges posed by diversity and inequality in the construction of inclusive societies.

This book critically reflects on the challenges faced by refugee aspirant professionals in securing employment and the ways in which professional intercultural competence development and attendant language learning practices can help facilitate the professional (re)integration in these communities. The volume draws on data from a large-scale research project that saw refugee aspirant professionals, researchers, and volunteer language teachers working together to develop and operationalise key intercultural skills needed for professional employment in the UK, the Netherlands, and Austria, ultimately culminating in a toolkit of free online resources co-designed to meet the needs of communities and facilitate the development of these practices across Europe. Detailed analyses of the data drawn from the project allow for critical reflections on co-production in intercultural spaces and researchers’ positionality, power relations, and ethical choices in multilingual contexts. Taken together, the book offers both theoretical and practical considerations for application beyond the European context toward better facilitating the professional (re)integration of migrant communities on a more global scale. The book will be of particular interest to students and researchers in intercultural communication, refugee studies, and language education.

Through its unique approach of using narratives and stories to convey theories and concepts, this text, now in its fourth edition, gives students a foundational knowledge in intercultural communication that is imperative for understanding and navigating our increasingly complex human interactions. This edition continues with an interpretive approach to intercultural communication that is dedicated to providing resources to understand and explain how our own and other cultural systems are reasonable and valuable. New to this edition are increased explorations of immigration, intersectionality, and privilege. For greater flexibility, it introduces a series of mini chapters on topics such as globalization (including discussion of the impact of new media and popular culture), education, and the role of culture in family communication, health communication, environmental communication and multicultural leadership. Each chapter again closes with a summary, reflection questions, and suggestions for activities available for students’ own review or as potential class exercises. The book is an ideal companion for introductory or upper-level undergraduate courses in intercultural communication. Online resources include self-tests, enrichment activities, reflection questions, recommendations for addition readings for students, lecture slides, chapter objectives, supplemental readings, sample discussion and test questions, and additional classroom activities for instructors. Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives, this book critically examines intercultural theory and its interrelations with globalisation, education and dialogue in multicultural societies. Applying the ethics of Emmanuel Levinas, the author repositions intercultural communication within a new paradigm that challenges static interpretations of self and other, and suggests future directions for the development of a post-methodological framework based on the decentring of the researcher. This innovative work will provide researchers and language teachers with the critical tools needed to challenge instrumentalist approaches to communication in a diverse global context, characterised by conflict and fear of the other and fresh insights to scholars of education, applied linguistics and sociology.

The past several decades have seen the re-invigoration of the concept of “intercultural competence” as one of the fundamental and most promising approaches towards studying culture in a respectfully complex way. The introduction of this concept, which has been defined and adapted in manifold ways in various disciplines, offers new ways of exploring the inherent multiplicity and versatility of cultural encounters and mutual understanding. This book brings together a stellar group of international researchers working in such diverse fields as business studies, religious studies, educational studies and communication studies. In critical pursuit of how to set intercultural competence to work in today’s society, the contributors to this indispensible volume elucidate with passion and astuteness the challenges and potentials of interculturality and interreligiosity.

Europe has talked itself into a refugee and security crisis. There is, however, a misrecognition of the real challenge facing Europe: the challenge of managing the relationship between Europeans and the currently stigmatized ‘others’ which it has attracted. Making the case against a ‘Europe of walls’, Robin Wilson instead proposes a refounding of Europe built on the power of diversity and an ethos of hospitality rather than an institutional thicket serving the market.

Intercultural Education And Competences written by Carl Grant and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-06 with Education categories.

This book primarily analyses the current situation in intercultural education and intercultural competences, and addresses the challenges to, and possible ways of dealing with, different perspectives in intercultural education. Advances in the new millennium, such as the revolution in information technologies, have led to a reduction in distances between people, stronger ties between different geographical areas, and greater mobility. This volume examines how these advances seem to have given rise to profound economic, environmental, political, social, and cultural crises, not just within nations, but also in relations between cultures. Such crises are of concern to all aspects of human life, including family, work and mass media, but they particularly affect educational institutions. The papers in this collection explain, therefore, why it is necessary to invest in education.

Current processes of globalization are challenging Human Rights and the attempts to institutionalize them in many ways. The question of the connection between religion and human rights is a crucial point here. The genealogy of the Human Rights is still a point of controversies in the academic discussion. Nevertheless, there is consensus that the Christian tradition – especially the doctrine that each human being is an image of God – played an important role within the emergence of the codification of the Human Rights in the period of enlightenment. It is also obvious that the struggle against the politics of apartheid in South Africa was strongly supported by initiatives of churchy and other religious groups referring to the Human Rights. Christian churches and other religious groups do still play an important role in the post-apartheid South Africa. They have a public voice concerning all the challenges with which the multiethnic and economically still deeply divided South African society is faced with. The reflections on these questions in the collected lectures and essays of this volume derive from an academic discourse between German and South African scholars that took place within the German-South African Year of Science 2012/13.
