Are Biblical Cherubim like the lamassus, those human-headed bulls or lions of the Ancient Near East? Are they like the winged babies of Renaissance Art? Here, two interpretations and iconographical representations are found. Some scholars seem to assimilate the Biblical Cherubim to the lamassus, while others consider Cherubim simply as winged chubby babies. Why the Renaissance Art did represented the Cherubim in winged babies form? The purpose of this research is also to understand the nature and the different functions of biblical cherubim through the Christian tradition and the works of the Church Fathers. What Judaism (Talmud and Midrash) says about the cherubim? The author also examines some apocryphal texts or writings on this cherubim issue, and the different representations of cherubim from the Art of the Renaissance. However, in the Bible there is not only one type of cherub but several with different functions. If the Renaissance artists represented biblical Cherubim in winged babies, it is because of their inspiration which was based on accurate data namely: the apocryphal texts, the writings of the Church Fathers, and Judaism (the Sukkah, the Hagigah, the Yoma and the Talmud).

This study examines the physical form and cultic function of the biblical cherubim. Previous studies of the cherubim have placed too great an emphasis on archaeological and etymological data. This monograph presents a new synthetic study, which prioritises the evidence supplied by the biblical texts. Biblical exegesis, using literary and historical-critical methods, forms the large part of the investigation (Part I). The findings arising from the exegetical discussion provide the basis upon which comparison with etymological and archaeological data is made (Parts II and III). The results suggest that traditions envisaging the cherubim as tutelary winged quadrupeds, with one head and one set of wings, were supplanted by traditions that conceived of them as more enigmatic, obeisant beings. In the portrayal of the cherubim in Ezekiel and Chronicles, we can detect signs of a conceptual shift that prefigures the description of the cherubim in post-biblical texts, such as The Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice and the Enochic texts.

The most important objects in the Hebrew Bible are a wooden box, styled in English "the ark" or "the ark of the covenant", and two statues of winged creatures, "the cherubim", that surmount it. Raanan Eichler attempts to understand these objects using the full gamut of data and tools available to the modern scholar. The study features an abundance of visual comparative material, much of it in colour, with a particularly close examination of the finds from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The author proposes solutions to a number of unsolved puzzles, such as the question of what cherubim looked like, and offers a new explanation of the nature of the ark and the cherubim, rejecting the prevailing scholarly view of them as having constituted an "empty throne" and footstool for the God of Israel. Rather, he argues, they constituted an empty frame, a unique cultic focus that surpassed all known systems in the ancient Near East in the extent of the efforts it represented to prevent an anthropomorphic conception of the deity in a cultic context.
