The Choice is an inspiring story of an ordinary woman's spirited fight against cancer, which defied all the odds. In 1988, Bernadette Bohan won a battle against cancer. But when she became pregnant seven years later, a doctor told her that it was likely to trigger a return of the disease. She didn't hesitate and gave birth to the child she had longed for. However, her fight wasn't over. Five years later the cancer attacked her body again. Bernadette made another choice. In desperation, she decided that her best chance of survival was not simply to be a passive patient and blindly follow her doctor's advice, but to create her own prescription. When news of Bernadette's triumph over cancer brought others flocking to her door seeking help, this ordinary Irish wife and mother found her life transformed. And she realised that her illness was a gift after all.

The emotional pressures on cancer patients and their families are increasing and traditional supports are decreasing. This book attempts to provide a readable, authoritative and balanced review of the emotional pressures and coping methods of cancer patients, and the help currently available to them. The special problems of children and terminal patients with cancer, and the role of the family in coping, are also examined. A balanced and critical assessment is made of defects in health organisation, training of personnel and attitudes to cancer patients in Western society. A similar assessment is made of the growing tendency to self help, mutual help and group activities for such patients. While each individual needs to select coping aids best suited to his or her own temperament, medical advisors need to make more time available for discussion of technical, emotional, social and sexual problems. The availability of a cancer-treating "team" makes this feasible. Chapters were invited from physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and sociologists expert in this field, and they have responsed to the challenge of writing in non-technical language. This is so that readership can cross disciplinary boundaries and thus stimulate physicians, nurses, psychologists, sociologists, clergy and others, to satisfy some of the currently unmet needs of cancer patients. The reader may note a small amount of overlap between some chapters, permitted in order to maintain continuity and make each chapter complete in itself.

The National Institutes of Health Publication 12-0856, Coping With Advanced Cancer: Support for People with Cancer, provides information for patients with end-stage cancer and discusses treatment options such as palliative care, clinical trials, hospice care, and home care, as well as symptom control. It addresses emotional concerns, communicating with friends and family, and living life to its fullest and with meaning. You've struggled with the diagnosis, treatment, and maybe the recurrence of cancer. Now doctors may have told you that you have advanced cancer. They may have said that your cancer is not responding to treatment and that long-term remission is no longer likely. Or they may have said they have run out of standard treatment options. However you learn the news, it can be devastating to you and your loved ones. Often it's hard to believe or accept at first. Having advanced cancer can bring anxiety and uncertainty to your life. But some people with advanced cancer live far longer than expected. And remember, you are still in control of your choices and actions. Having an advanced disease can be a time of personal growth. It can even be a time of second chances. Many people say they started to see life in a new way after learning that their cancer had progressed despite treatment. They realized the importance of making the most of each day. This booklet stresses four main points: Learning more about ways you can help yourself may ease some of your concerns; Your treatment may change, but as always, you deserve to ask for and receive good medical attention from your health care team and support from your caregivers; It's important to talk about your worries, frustrations, and problems, and get support from others. In fact, it may be one of the best things you can do for yourself; As your medical care changes, you still have many choices. You can choose the way you wish to live each day.~
