As the rift widened into Machiavellian dimensions, many others found themselves caught in the schism--Leo Beckford, brilliant but wayward organist, repelling the adoration of the Dean's dreadful daughter--the gentle, left-wing Bishop, trying to soothe the angry protagonists--Sally Ashworth, mother of the leading chorister, fighting loneliness and an erring and absent husband. Each frail and human dilemma took its part in the greater turmoil of Chapter and Close and the final battle for the survival of the Choir.

The Chorale Book for England is a profoundly rich, valuable book, both the words and the music. This is a collection of 200 German hymns translated into English by Catherine Winkworth, with German hymn tunes edited by William Sterndale Bennett and Otto Goldschmidt. Winkworth published the first volume of Lyra Germanica in 1855 (London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855), and the "Second Series" in 1858. These were her translations of German hymns into English, a treasure of true worship. The Lyra Germanica Series I had 103 hymns, arranged around the church calendar; Series II had 121 hymns, arranged according to subjects. The Chorale Book for England was a set of German hymns translated by C.W. in her Lyra Germanica (and also other hymns not in the Lyra Germanica), with music scores-chiefly from German hymnbooks-edited by William Sterndale Bennett and Otto Goldschmidt. Here is true worship, glorifying God and edifying and enriching His people.

When Bernarr Rainbow was director of music at the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea, he came across the 1849 diary of service music of Thomas Helmore. Astonished at its breadth of repertoire, he was inspired to investigate the circumstances of the document. His findings are recorded in this book, which sets Thomas Helmore's contribution in perspective against the background of the Choral Revival as a whole. In tracing the history of the remarkable revival of care for the music of the liturgy, the author produced a socio-musical history of a period vital in the evolution of the Anglican Church, and made clear, probably for the first time, how music in the Anglican Churchcame to follow lines which are unique in Christendom. His book was originally published at a time of important changes in ecclesiastical thinking; his presentation of the decisions taken in the past which led to the existing relationship between choirs and congregations, interesting in itself, is also valuable in the continuing debate.
