Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Excerpt from The Historic Christ in the Faith of to-Day I. One of the elements of modern religious life to be greatly prized is a widespread desire to learn all that can be known of Jesus of Nazareth. Every attempt to meet this need of a reliable representation of the facts about Jesus must be based upon pro longed criticism of the historical sources, combined with recurrent contemplation of His Person. The Gospels must be appraised, or they will never be appreciated. Evasion of free inquiry, either on the pretext of the sanctity of the books or the majesty of their subject, excites a corrosive suspicion that the history cannot be trustworthy. Even now an opinion is abroad that we cannot be sure of the truth of the Gospels; and with it mingles an impatience at endless, abstruse inquiries which lead nowhere. From all sorts and conditions of men there comes a loud demand for frankness from competent scholars. While there can be only a limited num ber of men intellectually equipped for dealing with the recondite problems arising out of the Synoptical and Johannine literature, there is a growing multitude who feel themselves held by the soul's quest for Jesus Christ. The following study, therefore, aims at showing how one of the multitude who seek for this supremely important knowledge, having been guided by an honest, earnest impressionism, has gained the satisfaction of a reconstructed con ception of the world's greatest, most loving and Divine Teacher. Jesus is no spent force; He is still luring men forward by His gracious, strong personality. The rigorous criticism to which the Gospels have been subjected has resulted in a vindication of their substantial historicity. Tnixlike a new thought of Jesus rises from the fires of criticism, andwe see this indestructible Person more clearly than any generation since the time of the Apostles. How He lived and died, what He believed and taught, can be discovered with greater certainty and lucidity by reason of the work done by scholars and critics. He is the supreme subject of the whole library. Every several book gathers its value from its testimony to His person, His teaching, or His work. Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Ages The substance of this book, in all of its essen tial features, was carefully read by the late Dr. A. J. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Jesus of History I regard it as a high privilege to be associated with this volume. Many who know and value Mr. Glover's work on The Conflict of Religions in the Early Roman Empire must have wistfully desired to secure from his graphic pen just such a book as is here given to the world. He possesses the rare power of reverently handling familiar truths or facts in such manner as to make them seem to be almost new. There are few gifts more precious than this at a time when our familiarity with the greatest and most sacred of all narratives is a chief hindrance to our ready appreciation of its living power. I believe that no one will read Mr. Glover's chapters, and especially his description of the parable-teaching given by our Lord, without a sense of having been introduced to a whole series of fresh and fruitful thoughts. He has expanded for us with the force, the clearness, and the power of vivid illustration which we have learned to expect from him, the meaning of a sentence in the earlier volume I have alluded to, where he insists that, Jesus of Nazareth does stand in the center of human history, that He has brought God and man into a new relation, that He is the present concern of every one of us and that there is more in Him than we have yet accounted for. Excerpt from Did Jesus Really Live?: A Reply to 'the Christ Myth' The interest in Jesus of Nazareth seems to grow from more to more. Each succeeding age discovers in him some fresh attraction, or reinterprets in accordance with its own needs aspects of his life and teaching which appealed to former times. In an age of criticism such as ours it is inevitable that much is called in question which once went unchallenged. Hence it need occasion no surprise if Christianity is asked to give an account of itself. In such a case the task of the Christian apologist is not to denounce but to discuss - to indicate that historical criticism is a means of defence and not a mere instrument of attack. Accordingly this little book attempts to deal suggestively rather than exhaustively with the important issue raised in recent critical works. It is written in the sincere hope that it may prove helpful to some who believe with the writer that the historic personality of Jesus is fundamental to Christian faith. Excerpt from The Life and Words of Christ N o apology is needed for the publication of another Life of Christ, for the subject, to use the words of Mr. Carlyle, is of quite perennial, infinite character, and its significance will ever demand to be anew inquired into, and anew made manifest. The freshness and interest of the name of Jesus, and its power as a great factor in the spiritual history of the world, increase with each generation. The influence of His life, His words, and His death, have, from the first, been like leaven cast into the mass of humanity. He made religion Spiritual instead of ceremonial and external; universal, in stead of local. He gave us the magnificent dowry of a faith in One Common Father of the Whole human race, and, thus, of a world-wide brotherhood of all mankind. He confirmed the doctrine of our immortality, and scattered abroad the germs of a heavenly life by His fundamental requirements of love to God and our neighbour. All reforms of individual and public life lie veiled in these principles, awaiting the advance of our moral sense, to apprehend and apply them. They have already given freedom to the slave; raised woman; purified morals; mitigated war; created liberty; and made humanity a growing force, in things private, civil.
