Michael, aged seventeen, is slumbering on an eerily hot spring night. Without warning, a human with purple eyes breaks through his window and pins Michael to the bed. At that moment, a skeleton leaps out of the night and cuts the head off as more humans with purple eyes flood in. The skeleton set to work on cutting them down. Soon, Michaels room resembles a slaughterhouse. Father Gordon drags Michael from his room to an awaiting van as a purple hue consumes the city of Detroit. In the van, Michael learns that he has been born in a war of the heavens and Derrock and that he is the reason for the purple hue. He also learns that one half of his soul is pure, the other evil. Will the pure light of his soul bring the end to all souls or will evil damn the earth and heavens to damnation? Michael has the beast stirring inside, and it wants out. Can Michael control the beast and his mind?

In this paradigm-shifting book, celebrated historian Tiya Miles reveals that slavery was at the heart of the Midwest's iconic city: Detroit. Miles has pieced together the experience of the unfree - both native and African American - in the frontier outpost of Detroit, a place wildly remote yet at the centre of national and international conflict. The result is fascinating history, little-explored and eloquently told, of the limits of freedom in early America, one that adds new layers of complexity that completely change our understanding of slavery's American legacy.

Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... unconscious. On October 9th he passed to the land whence no traveler has returned. When Dr. Morse Stewart began practice in Detroit, the state of Michigan and its university were but five years old. Detroit's population was about ten thousand, eight thousand being French who lived by farming, hunting, fishing and collecting furs. The rest were army people and their families, with mechanics needed for such a population. To these must be added a motley swarm of land-lookers, numbers of the suddenly rich, boomers, speculators, sharpers, merchants, lawyers and doctors. By decision of the supreme court any person could become a doctor by assuming the title. As may be inferred fcom the character of the population, the fees of the doctors were meager, if any, and often had to be taken in "store pay," which meant a discount of twenty-five or more per cent, for cash. The practice of medicine was quite unsatisfactory, both from the popular ignorance of sanitary conditions and the absence of those aids which characterize modern practice. With the practical application of the discoveries and inventions which transformed Detroit from a measly little village to the peerless metropolis of to-day, and the practice of medicine from a series of guesses to accurate knowledge based on demonstrated facts, Dr. Stewart kept such close touch that at the close of sixty-four years of continuous labor in his profession his actual practice was wholly modern. Time forbids proof of the proposition that the medical profession of Michigan has been a very large factor in the building of the state. Educated, clean, strong physicians like Dr. Stewart have ever exercised large influence upon currents of state life and invariably for their benefit. In 1852 Dr. Stewart...

In 1762, Chapman Abraham became the first Jew to set foot in Detroit, and the Jewish community has played a significant role in Detroit's history ever since. Sarah and Isaac Cozens formed the Beth El Society in 1850, when the census showed 51 Jewish adults living in Detroit. The cholera epidemic of 1854 claimed the life of the rabbi of Detroit's only Jewish congregation. But the community continued to grow, and to serve. Two-hundred and ten Jewish soldiers from Michigan served in the Civil War-more than one per family. Jewish Detroit chronicles in photographs the history of this remarkable community in Detroit, from its growth within the city to its migration to the suburbs, from its battles against anti-Semitism at the hands of Henry Ford and others to celebrating its own heroes like Hank Greenberg, the all-star first baseman of the Detroit Tigers.
