Each of the animal clans are representative of different social and ethnic groups. As they battle for ultimate power and survival, we see the destructive power of prejudice and the fear and hostility it produces. Running alongside the main story are tales of love and friendship seen through the eyes of a young girl entering into her teenage years. The novel uses historic notions of hybrid humans in mythology religion and astrology.
