Excerpt from The Church of England and the Holy See So much has been written on the subject of the Oxford Movement that it might seem superfluous at this time of day to attempt anything more, were there not a danger of its teaching being so diluted as to lose its taste, or so explained away as to be robbed of its meaning. After all, the Centenary, by the very meaning of the term, is intended to recall something that happened a hundred years ago - a scene that we can picture in the University Church at Oxford, and a sermon that was preached in the presence of his Majesty's judges by John Keble on July 14th, 1833; a moment, moreover, that was not to end in itself, but was to mark the commencement of a great Catholic revival, destined to spread throughout the country, to make its way into our Colonies, and even to command the attention of the world; a revival that was stamped with the Catholic stamp to start with, and was intended to retain that stamp to the end; a movement that has had to push its way from the first, in the face of persistent Opposition, persecution, and even prohibition; and to deliver its message, whether men would hear or whether they would forbear, calling upon them to declare themselves, and to say, not whether they liked its teaching, but whether they were willing to learn it, to regulate their lives by it, and if necessary to suffer for it. The Catholic revival never has been a popular movement, in the superficial sense of the term; and although it can point back in the past to a succession of victories, none of its positions has been won Without fighting for it, some of them not without also going to prison. Now, men do not go to prison for nothing, nor do the authorities step in, unless there is something they wish to stop. I have to shelter myself, therefore, under the well known saying that in questions of this kind egotism is true modesty; and I have the highest sanction for doing so. Towards the close of his Second Eirenicon, which was given to the world in the shape of a letter addressed in the first instance to Cardinal Newman, Dr. Pusey is careful to explain his position thus: "I could not even conjecture what its effects would be (the allusion is to the First Eirenicon). I could only commit it to God, who, I hoped, had taught me to turn into an Eirenicon what, at the earnest desire of others, I had begun as a defence... "But God had, I trusted, put it into my heart to do it... I wish in this new 'Eirenicon' to be understood as speaking in the name of no one but my single self. I have consulted no one." And so in my own case, and in my own small measure, although the Association for Promoting the Unity of Christendom has been in existence now for some forty years I have never had the honour of belonging to it, nor have I had the privilege of an introduction to its present Master. I was invited on one occasion to preach for the Society; and the Secretary did me the kindness of allowing me to make some use of the late Master's pamphlet for the earlier pages of my last chapter; but otherwise he knows nothing of the line I am following in this Essay. It told of Christ and of God's love in Him; it gave fellowship in and participation of Christ, and through/him it knit together in one all members of His mystical Body - one with Him, and so one with other.
